Yeah, I watched some of the commentary (which is Miike and the creator of the original manga, whose name escapes me) and Miike talks about how Asano had turned him down a few times in the past due to not liking violence. When the creator of the manga asked him how he got Asano to do such a violent role, he said something about how the violence was just so over the top and crazy, that Asano didn't have as much of a problem with it. But it really makes his portrayal all the more impressive, given his real-life view on violence.
