**************************************SPOILER*********************************************
I see you're point, but it wasn't like the decision to kill themselves came completely out of the blue. You saw hope leaving their faces as the ending progressed. The empty school bus, the turned over cars, the giant creature in the road, I'm sure they were thinking the mist spread over the entire world. What chance could they stand? The car running out of gas was the final nail in the coffin. By that moment, they had already accepted their fate. As for him shooting his son, think back to the promise he made to him in the grocery store. He promised he'd never let one of the monsters get him. I'm sure that's one of the first things that came to his mind when he heard the creatures in the distance after the car died. Why did it happen so fast? I guess the easiest analogy would be like pulling off a band-aid. You know it's going to hurt a lot, but you know it needs to be done. Don't think about it, don't build up to it, just do it.
And the military coming in last minute, I thought it was brilliant. Does it make the mist seem like a military fuck up? Yes, but that's what it was in the first place. And I'd hate to side with the religious nut in the film, but the in the end the main problem the main characters had was they had little to no faith. It was their tragic flaw, which until the end appeared to be their greatest strength. Had they waited just a little bit longer, they would have been saved. It's sad, it's unfair, it's horror. That's why I loved it!
