I'm going to start by saying I like a good majority of Stephen King movies, THE DEAD ZONE, THE SHINING, 1408, THE STAND, and CARRIE first come to mind. However, I do not love them. They never really feel fleshed out, and the endings are usually mediocre. Well, that trend has broken, and THE MIST is the first Stephen King adaptation that I have to say I down right LOVE. I mean: WOW, AMAZING, HARD-ON inducing LOVE.
God bless you Frank Darabont. Using your Academy Award Nominated A-list talent for the greater good of horror. I've always known he was a fan of the genre, and it's about time he stepped up to the plate. The result is not only my favorite film of the year, but also one of the best horror films ever made. THE MIST can easily be placed alongside a mighty like THE THING (which is actually blatantly referenced within the first 5 minutes of the movie ) And like THE THING, it contains the one thing I felt 30 DAYS OF NIGHT could've used to make that movie great, the element of human nature.
It also has quite a few wonderful gooey gory moments, it's at times funny, and the ending is the equivalent of a brass knuckle sucker punch to the stomach. I really feel the need to rush out to the theatre and see this again as soon as possible. I can't stop smiling .
Also note, fans of H.P. Lovecraft will be glad to finally see Lovecraftian type beasties treated with the amount of respect they deserve. I know tentacled beings and flying insects don't SOUND all that terrifying, but wait till you see what happens when they get somebody in their grasp, I guarantee you'll think differently.
Overall, everybody, do yourself a favor and go check out this movie. I'm shocked more people haven't seen this already, or even commented on it if they have.
