then why call it halloween? i'm interested in seeing this, and am a huge fan of robs directing. that being said, if he's gonna completely start from scratch, then why bother milking the 'halloween' name? couldn't he just start his own original 'slasher' series?
Thats been my thing all along. Any remake/rehash/ retooling, whatever you want to call it, loses points in my book just for using/borrowing the original name and concepts. Even the good ones lose points. For instance the new TCM was actually pretty good (doesnt touch the original of course) But immedialtely after watching it I pondered why they would even call it TCM. Lose the Leatherface guy,or give him a different weapon and mask, and continue to focus on the fucked-upness of R. Lee Ermy's character, who was great. And then when its done, call it something else. It would score higher im my book with an original name.
Movies, like other forms of media, are influenced by other movies. This is nothing new, bad, or abnormal. So why not finish the job and call it something else? and keep the similarities loose and less obvious. I mean they already did most of the work in the TCM remake by taking liberties with some changes( ie. the hitchhiker.)
I dont know. I've turned a corner with remakes and can now at least watch them, but I find that ultimately it still bothers me a little. Especially if its actually good, I'll be in the middle of watching it and repeating to myself that its too bad they didnt "finish the job" and make it completely their own.
As I wrote that last sentece it occured to me. Is it even possible for a remake to ever become a true classic? It seems to me when the decision is initially made to take the remake road this possibility is being voluntarily forfeited.
I loke Halloween. I like Rob Zombie. And of all the people out their I probably trust him the most to do a cool job. But already I'm asking myself what DethMetalAnimal asked. Why call it Halloween? I mean Myers is sometimes looked at as the boogyman, which in itself is not a new concept, nor was it when Halloween came out. Thats part of the brilliance of Halloween. It was the childhood scary myth of the boogyman come to life. So why not just use the boogyman concept and run with it?
Whats next? Im waiting for the day when it will be commonplace for authors to do remakes of books. Sounds absurd, but to me it is very similar in that both are supposed to be artforms in a manner of speaking.
For that matter, maybe I will do a remake of the Mona Lisa and keep the same name, but I will give her blonde hair and big tits. Just following the trends...
