My favorite franchise is remade and it opens this friday.
A Nightmare On Elm Street.
I like Jackie Earle Haley, hes made some real good films with terrific performances. I dont mind this movie being remade without Robert Englund for the simple reason that, you cant make him the *creepy* character anymore. The franchise took a twist after part five that turned the movies into more of *comedy horror*. They tried going back to more of a horror twist with New Nightmare, which I liked but didnt buy Robert as *creepy*.
Now, I hoped they were going to go back to horror with this remake. I like the franchise so much hat I could look past it being remade if they could just bring back that irie feeling to the Freddy character. I thought they found the right guy with Jackie.
I loved how we didnt really see Freddy in the first movie, he was more of a shadow with a creepy voice.
Looking at the trailer, this has Micheal Bay written all over it. Every trailer ive seen, you can clearly see Freddys face and the creepiness of it ....well..there is no creepiness feeling to it.
I will be seeing his in theaters and I know I will be disapointed even tho im 100% sure Jackie will pull out a tremendous performance.
Did I mention fuck Micheal Bay ?

I was invited to a midnight show on Thursday but I don't think I'm going to go. Even though it would be free. I'm in absolutely no hurry to see this Platinum Dune$ ca$h grab.

I'm going to take my friend to see it this weekend. Not really because I want to, but because I turned her onto horror movies and Freddy is her favorite.
We've both had a terrible couple of weeks, so hopefully we can have a good time and get past some of this crap.
As far as the movie is concerned, I believe I'll like it just as much as the original...which means I'll tolerate it.

I can't wait to see it and looking forward to read what everyone here thinks. I am not a big NOES fan. I liked the first two films but I am a big Jackie Earle Haley fan. I think hes gonna do just fine. The supermarket scene, well clip, was pretty creepy.

Ok, here we go, I've been really struggling with this one.
On the one hand, this is probably the most classic and perfect original film to get the platinum dunes remake treatment. And as much as I'm willing to give JEH a chance, I can't help but feel that this movie is I'll fated due to the fact that Robert Englund is so personified as Fred Krueger. Not only to us die hard horror fans, but even when a casual movie goer thinks NOES and Freddy, Robert Englund is sure to come to mind.
There was an online poll on aol titled "which Freddy do you prefer" had good pictures of both and the comments and votes for Englund heavily outweighed the redesign.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to give this movie a shot. It doesn't matter about the teens, the story, or anything aside from seeing Freddy on the silver screen again, fucking the elm street kids up. I'd love to give JEH a fair shake. The dilemma here is in no way do I want to promote this film, or help it drudge along to an undeserved ticket by tossing this made for money film my dollar.
Now let's not kid ourselves, the sequels to our beloved franchises were all made to cash in on a great concept, movie, or idea. You see, that's the problem with these remakes; Freddy, Jason, Michael, they're no different than Godzilla, Dracula, or Frankenstein. They've run them so far that now they too have reached the inevitable reboot.
These remakes are basically the same shitty sequels we got a decade ago, only now they're jacking the titles of the original film to peak interest, and generate revenue. An original isn't made with money as the sole intent, and isn't garunteed classic status to begin with.
Robert Shaye, and Wes Craven didn't know if what they were doing would work, much less be the success that it is today. Yet platinum dunes has already signed JEH on for more films before the release of their film because hey, it's a nightmare on elm street, it's sure to generate sales.
It sucks because in a way I want to give this movie a chance, but on the heavier scale I just want it to utterly fail.
On to the trailers. So far I like how JEH looks like a more genuine burn victim, but dislike the voice, and how he looks short and stockey in some scenes. I also like how CGI is way easier than going out and getting some spandex for christ's sake. Greatness is born out of the chance of failure, and this movie's special effects are pampered to be easy and cheap.
The bottom line after this rant is, regardless of if you're for or against this film and remakes in general. It should be painfully obvious that 1. This movie is made solely for profit. 2. There was just no reason to fuck with A Nightmare on Elm Street.
This movie will succeed or fail on the coattails of a generation younger than all of us, the question is, our they biting? Cause any self respecting horror fan shouldn't! :P

lots of nuts. But maybe the problem lies in the fact that too many people are thinkers and not doers. I'm sure we all could do original, better work than this, so what's the problem.
There are way too many politics in cinema to even get started.

He may well be the king of the geeks. But, he has had his lips planted firmly on Micheal Bays ass ever since they put him in the TCM remake.. It's my opinion that the guys reviews can't be trusted.

I trust them, I've heard a lot of good things from other sources as well.. but really Bay had next to nothing to do with this movie aside from slapping his name on with a producer credit to give it a big name recognition as pretty much noone else involved is a hugely known name.
From what I've heard is, Jackie Earle Hayley just does an amazing job as freddy, is brutal and creepy as shit, the plot is much more fleshed out and story really matters and goes a long way here.
I have very mixed feelings about a remake of such a great movie but, at the least I can go in and pretend it's Watchmen 2: Rorschachs revenge and have a hell of a time watching a burned Rorschach slicing up kids.

If by them, you mean Harry, then you're definatly in a minority there Misfit. I think Massawyrm's review is much more believable. At least he's not afraid to pan a movie. Harry seems to love everything. Can you say payola?
Also, I just spent the last half hour scanning reviews on several sites and most are saying it's mediocre to terrible. I really can't wait to hear what some of the folks here say about it.

yeah, dude. I think that's similar to how I was anticipating Land of the Dead. haha.
I'm giving this one a shot, but my expectations are low as hell.
I need to stop this behavior where I go to the theater to see awful shit like Legion but miss stuff with far more potential like Shutter Island.

What has been said, even from the unfavorable reviews, is that NOES is better than any of the other Platinum Dunes remakes, they admit this even if they did not like it..
personally, I liked quite a few of them more than I thought I would.

ANOES was alright. I saw it last night at a midnight showing. IMO it was better than Friday the 13th, and possibly tied with Halloween. TCM was still the best classic remake I think.
In this remake Freddy still kept a tiny bit of his sarcastic sadistic humor. Not a whole lot of blood. I think the original might have been more graphic. No nudity and not a lot of cussing. This was actually a pretty mild R rating. The story line was interesting. Gave a little more info than the original. JEH did a pretty good job as Freddy. Sometimes he looked good (cool/scary), and sometimes it wasn't great. I thought the opening credits were pretty cool. See it for yourself and post what you think. I really don't wanna give to much away or help sway anybody's decision before they see it.

by going to the theater and paying money to see remakes like this, you are encouraging studios to make more remakes instead of orginal films.

I know, I felt really bad for going. It's just there is this real ghetto grindhouse near my town. I'm talking the movie doesn't even fit on their outdated screens ghetto, and the ticket prices are 3 - 5 dollars.
So I payed as little as possible, and hopefully by some higher force, this theater wont even help them out. I was also one of 5 people in there.

I read this guy's review, and he almost makes you think it's great. But after seeing this myself, he's a total asshat. In no way is that review honest, or unbiased. It's impossible that he is reviewing the film with the right merits in mind.
I think someone over at PD slipped him some MDMA before his screening.

And you know what? Fuck platinum dunes, they make me seem jaded and like an asshole when the real problem is that their movies fucking suck.
Best of the platinum dunes remakes? Like that's something to be proud of, not to mention a false statement to begin with.
These movies are succeeding in 1 thing IMO. Revealing the true colors, and spineless nature of all those involved sans JEH.
I would go find a freddy glove and go michael bay asshole diving if it weren't for all these micronaps of who gives a flying fuck I keep finding myself in.

I actually don't mind the TCM and Friday the 13th remakes. Do I think they're awesome? No, not really, but they're watchable. I actually think the F13th remake was the best "Jason movie" since pt 3. I'd rather see fresh material too, but it doesn't look as if that's going to happen all that often at this point.
These remakes are raking in the cash and the teenagers love them. Then there are people like my friend. It's tough to get her to watch a 25 year old movie that has no famous people in it. I know this to be a fact, because I've tried to get her interested in classic horror films numerous times with very little success. She won't watch Romero's Dawn Of The Dead, but she LOVES the remake. It doesn't make her a bad person, it just means she doesn't know what she's missing...

Not that I would ever see this remake, nor do I have interest in any other remakes of "bad" but "good" 80's slashers I really have no problems with the current trend of remakes beyond the fact the orginal films are not getting greenlit.
To better understand what is happening you have to look at the history od storytelling when a story evolved with each generation that told it. This was true for all the early civilations mythologies and religions. Do people really thing that Homer's Illiad is same as it was told 300 years before Homer lived, no Homer was the first to write the story down, same thing goes for Beowolf, the Nibelungenlied (Ring of the Nibelung), and the Old testiment.
In modern days we see Dracula and Frankenstien retold in film with each generation since the inception of film. Now we are seeing the new iconic horror tales retold. Makes perfect sense, the stories are updated for the next generation sensiblilities. As someone who was able to see the orginal films in the theater I have to accept that these remakes are not made for me but rather a demographic that my childeren would be in. Older horror fans need to remember that the demographics for a horror film are 18 to 25.
Instead of being upset at the reimagining of these characters we as fans of the orginals we should be happy that a small time period (between 1975 and 1985) at least 3 icon horror figures were created, something that had not really happened before since all the previous icons where from victorian or post victorian authors and not films (with the notable exceptions of the werewolf and the living dead).

i'M 25 so I fit into that demographic, and I can tell you it sucks.
I also can imagine that younger audiences than myself are too wrapped up in playing super street fighter 4 online with their friends than going to see some horror movie.
It seems Nightmare pulled in 15 Million, and is expected to top the box office weekend at around 35 million. Budget for the picture was 35 million. So lets hope after breaking even there is a huge drop off of sales. So far it's underperforming compared to F13 remake which had a 40 million opening box office.

Just saw it yesterday and well, it's really not that good.
The film does nothing more than take some of the subtext of the first film and shove it in your face. Jackie Earle Haley is quite great, but unfortunately the success of the film needed more than just him. Nancy is just another horror movie dumbass, instead of being smart and assertive. Freddy still has one liners, they're just not funny this time. And the film is shot in that typical platinum dunes style where everything looks like its rubbed with ham and rolled around in dust, or vice versa.
It's not that its bad, its just not very good, remakes have to be great, if they're not then you should have made your own film. If you're remaking something so popular, then it should be expected that people are going to pick it apart.
PS, so with the upcoming Platinum Dunes Monster Squad remake, are we going to get this Freddy and the other Jason and Leatherface?

Whoa, is there something that I missed? Are they changing the monsters in Monster Squad??? This can't be right. Frankenstein's Monster, Dracula, Gillman, Wolfman, and the Mummy. There is no way they are replacing those with slashers....

It makes sense...theyre making movies for teenagers. Most teens havent heard of Gilman or the mummy...fuck some teens probably never heard of Franky"s monster!! Its terrible and to people like us it makes no god damn sense!!!! but to rich fucks like them, theyve proven that they dont care if they totaly fuck up a movie to make extra cash....and hell...I know people my age that are going to be soooooooo exited for this *if it comes out*
