My birthday just rolled around, and gave me some extra spending cash. Something I haven't seen in the better part of 2 years, lol. And it happened just in time for me to work on my old school VHS horror collection.
I actually have them all listed on my myspace page, I've had about 75 films in boxes, so I went and bought a new movie rack, and couldn't help but scoop up the complete toxic avenger box set. Now I have them all on display, on my page I estimated my film collection to be about 400 films, an actual count reveals them to be 357. Which still isn't bad.
I do the whole Original Print, Used Copy, As cheap as Possible thing. And right around my birthday I started to think how it might get kind of hard to nail these movies now, and it will only get harder. So I started an ebay account, and bought a few movies for the collection, they are:
1. Lucio Fulci's Zombi (needed an actual case, lol) 2. The Incredible Melting Man 3. The Funhouse 4. Blood Beach 5. TCM (old ass copy, completes my TCM OP collection) 6. Night Terrors 7. Frankenhooker 8. Nail Gun Massacre 9. Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers 10. The Kindred 11. The Shining 12. Prince of Darkness (been a long time comin') 13. Day of the dead (completes my Dead trilogy, original releases) 14. Scarecrows (I've heard good things about this, and was surprised no one else bid, got it for 3 bucks)
if you want to see the rest of my VHS horror films you can check out my myspace, I believe the link is:
www.myspace.com/snuff_reality, or remove the underslash if that isn't it, cause I'm not positive.
if you have one as well, feel free to friend me. And if you too are a vhs collector, let's discuss, and share.

Well, I am ever so slowly trying to replace my VHS with DVDs. But sometimes I get nostalgic about my VCR. I got my 1st player around Jr. High and that gave the freedom to really explore geeky movies and I haven't stopped since. On a sidebar, that's when I really discovered porno as well... but I digress.
In regard to your recent purchases....
One of these days I have to see Blood Beach.
I had The Kindred recorded on VHS off of HBO or something, but the tape got so old it wouldn't play.
Prince of Darkness, best movie ever, let the debating again anew.

Apparently a lot of people would like to see blood beach, cause I had to shell out almost 30 bucks for that, definitely the most expensive out of the bunch, since the others never cracked 5 bucks in the bid.
the funny thing is, I'm betting it's the worst film of the bunch as well, heard awful things, watched the trailer and felt stupid, but there was just something about it, that screamed must have.
an original print of Prince of Darkness has always eluded me, I love that cover, love the movie too, although the pace is somewhat slow some times, it's definitely up there though.
when I first got started collecting VHS, right down the street like 5 blocks from my house, this rental place called ZM Video opened up. They had a DVD rental wall, but the entire floor was previous rental VHS' and they had a shitload of horror movies.
They were selling them for 4 for 10, so every weekend, day, some times multiple times a day, lol. My girlfriend, and I would go buy movies for the collection. When we got up to about 75 movies the clerk told us we should go to their main store in a town near us called BOUTTE, and that they had way more tapes, so we went there and by god, it was that horror movie collector meets the gates of heaven thing.
Not only did they have fuckloads of movies, but like 4 or 5 copies of stuff I had already bought, then they dropped the price at that store to 10 for 10. So it was on, the collection boomed up to about 200 films, then they ran out. I apparently had 1 competitor.
The other funny thing was, I'm originally from Houston, and when we moved out here, we first came out, rented a hotel and looked for a house, and near the hotel which was in metairie, there was a video store called MAJOR VIDEO. Up to this point, I hadn't been collecting, and only saw films from like blockbuster, or hollywood video.
This Major Video place was like the Cult Horror Film fans wet dream, And I would always make occasional stops once living out here to check if they were selling anything. Luckily I caught their transition to DVD also, They did 2 dollars a VHS, and I must have dropped 600-1000 in there. That included two locations.
Now I'm whiddled down to EBAY. If I travel I always keep my eye out for local video stores and pawn shops lol, but usually no luck.
And as for Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, that does look badass, the trailer is great, that and nail gun massacre are going to be two of my favorites, I know it.

Back when mom & pop video stores were springing up all over the place, my local rental store had a copy of Barn of the Naked Dead which I tried for two years to rent. The whole time some bastard who rented it never brought it back. Good luck finding that in Hollywood Video late on Saturday Night.

I recently sold my entire VHS collection (about 275 movies) at a comic shop for 50 cents a movie. There were some great titles in the mix, but I decided to let pretty much all of them go. I kept Hell Night, Zombie, The Beyond and Sleepaway Camp. I don't really know why I kept any of them, because I don't even own a VCR anymore. I came into my bedroom one evening and looked at the massive shelves full of video tapes and thought it was stupid to keep them. They had been collecting dust for years, and I had already re-purchased pretty much every noteworthy film on dvd long ago. Oh well, I'm sure the token horror fan at the comic shop had a field day with them...

My horror movie VHS' are my pride & joy, even if I get DVD copies, I'll be buried with my horror collection, or pass it off to a true loved one.

That's great, but I'm not tied to any one format. As soon as Blu-Ray becomes affordable I'll start all over again...

I doubt I will do that, unless Blu-Ray prices drop. There was a time when I most definitely would have, but at this point there's too many other important things and not enough money. I've invested so much in audio and video media over my lifetime to date that I just don't have the heart to start over again. I've spent the last 10 or so years slowly replacing my VHS with DVD, and truthfully only in the last couple of years have I felt satisfied that I was actually *caught-up*. At some point I'm sure the industry will stop supporting DVD and force me into an upgrade, but until then I will probably stick with DVD.
Also... the thing that amazes me about HD and Blu-Ray is how easily the ripping community started taking advantage of that technology. Why would the industry continue to support this format when it basically offers them no protection against illegal copying and distribution? That being the case, it stands to reason that DVD and Blu-Ray will fall by the wayside as soon as a truly secure media is developed to stop or slow illegal ripping.

Technology will change dramatically every 10 years or so as far as film collecting is concerned. Think of the poor souls who used to drop a hundred bucks per laser disc back in the 80s and early 90s. Imagine how pissed they were when dvds were released.
How often do you think an avid LD collector said something along these lines in the mid to late 90s? What do you mean I can buy Night Of The Living Dead on a regular sized cd for 18 bucks? How can that be better than my expensive ass LD collection?
One thing will remain constant. Technology will advance, and if you let if leave you behind it's difficult to get caught up.
When dvds first hit it big I collected them avidly, but in the past few years I only buy movies that I have a genuine interest in. That way it won't suck too bad when I have to change formats again.

I've played it smart with my funds so far along the line of my VHS horror collection, I set up a few quidelines, which included 1. The films being used/previous rental in origin, and 2. No more than 5 dollars per film. So it really wasn't all that expensive for me to get these films, Plus for a horror collector I was blessed with a good location, with zero competition. I've bought the majority of about 4 different video stores horror sections, hit up dozens of blockbusters during their transition perious, and just started doing EBAY.
the only reason I posted this thread was because it's been a while since I've added films to the collection, and this is a pretty big set of films coming in, that I felt some characters here would appreciate, I also haven't seen most of these films, these are films the hands of me 15 years ago used to pick up in old video stores, that I've always wanted to see, and own.
I'd also like some insight on the films from other fans, and where else to find them but here? I feel that the period of horror back in the 70's, 80's, and early 90's through the video market, was an awesome time, and I personally want to archive it myself as big as I can for the love of the genre.
Sure I'll buy Last house on the Left on DVD, I already have, and when they release a better edition of it 20 years from now, I'll buy that too. But if you think I'm getting rid of the original VHS release of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT that I hunted down, and bought, you're fuckin' crazy. Not that it should mean shit to anyone else, but it does to me.
I mean, I've always planned to have a VCR in my house, I buy the combo's. And again, it's not like people give a fuck about VHS', I mean they're pretty shitty, when you really think about it, but that's part of what adds to the horror movie genre in those respects.
But people still collect vinyl huh? I guess they should just throw those out too?
I work at F.Y.E. which is the chain of CD/DVD stores in the mall around the U.S. they own Suncoast, and all that shit. So I'm not behind on my tech, If you remember my Special Editions thread, you would see I collect a lot of DVD's also, I'm just buying VHS again right now, because DVD's are going to be available, a lot longer than a copy of "blood beach" or something like that.
I've got hundreds of DVD's, 1,000's of CD's, and I'm an avid gamer, so my 3 hobbies are pretty expensive, and right now CD's, and DVD's are already ridiculously overpriced, and sometimes not even worth it. I only want to collect special, definitive editions now, and I'm pretty good on those for a while.
I'm not really interested in Blu-Ray, not at these prices, and to be honest I just don't see a difference. I mean I do, but to be honest IMO it's just not enough to warrant it over a DVD I would buy. And plus I use NETFLIX, so I really don't need DVD's right now. RENT dvd, BUY vhs I guess. lol.

I'm not trying to step on your toes man. If you like VHS tapes then by all means buy them up. You better stock up on VCRs though. It'll be tough to find one in working condition in about 5 or 10 years...

word up man, sorry if some of that came off hostile, I had some inner tension from somewhere else, and felt we were having a miscommunication. So just wanted to make sure I explained myself well, and it might've come off a little harsh in some spots man.
I just felt you thought that maybe I only did the VHS thing, and was avoiding other things, So I was just trying to get on the same page with you. lol. All cool man.
