The 2011 Horrorspeak Top 13 zombie films.
      #163873 - 07/29/11 03:12 PM

I'm stealing this one directly from Messiah. We'll be using the EXACT same format as his top 13 slashers thread.

Those who are interested in participating can PM their top 13 list to me before august 5th. I'll tally the scores and post the list, one film per day, until all 13 have been named and discussed.

Numbers 11-13 will be worth 1 point, numbers 10-6 are worth 5 points, numbers 5-2 are 10 points and your favorite zombie film is worth 15 points.

Send me those lists whenever you like. We have until Aug 5th. That's a full week's notice for everyone.

I look forward to hearing from lots of you guys. Let's work together and make this one as successful as Messiah's effort in the slashers section.

Hmm, this list will be a little harder for me to compile than the slasher list. Should be interesting.

Edit: I think we should all agree that infected should be counted as zombies.

Couple of thoughts....

First, is the list limited to movies only or does it include episodic TV?

Second, if a Resident Evil film breaks the top 5, I'm sending everyone a damned virus.

EDIT..

Egads! I'm just a couple of minutes into working on my list. There's gonna be just as many gray areas and rabbit holes on this list as we had on the top slashers thread.

I'd like it to be limited to films, but I can't stop anyone from including lit or episodic tv.

As far as I'm concerned, films like 28 Days Later and [REC] are welcomed. I don't consider "infected" as zombies personally, but that's not going to stop just about everyone from listing 28 Days Later. Might as well make it known that it's eligible.

That's probably a good place to leave it. But if you follow that line of thinking thru, if a [REC], or especially a [REC] 2 is allowed, then logically you could say films like Ghosts of Mars and Prince of Darkness could slip in as well.

Yeah, I'm kinda being an asshole. Ignore me.

Nice!!

Hmmm, what about Evil Dead and stuff like that?

Well, at least "zombie film" is easier to define than "creature feature", I guess...

I don't know what to say about films like Evil Dead, and EA brings up some good points concerning films like [REC] and Ghosts of Mars.

All I can say is it's not for me to decide what does and does not make a zombie a zombie. For every guy who feels 28 Days Later isn't a zombie movie, there are a hundred who think it is. I'm glad this is being discussed up front, because it needs to be covered. So, we have a week to iron these things out and get lists turned in. It should be plenty of time.

Personally, I don't consider films like evil dead to be zombie but that shouldn't stop someone who does from puttng it on their list.

This is going to be a fun list to compile!

I agree, the Evil Dead movies are demonic possession not zombies.

I only mentioned the infected because some people are going to go nuts about how they aren't dead and therefore don't qualify as zombies, even though the 28 days movies are zombie films in every other way. I figured if we covered it before list were turned in
It might be helpful to some.

I also think we should stick to films only.

I ain't getting into what is and is not a zombie movie, because I know 28 Days Later is going to show up on this list. [REC] has a good shot at showing too.

Maybe we should do the top 13 creature films in general. That'd put an end to this what is and isn't a zombie discussion in a hurry...

The slasher list worked itself out so will the zombie list. I'll be interested to see how many of the more recent ones make the list.

Ya, I'm for one going to attempt to make my list strictly zombies, no infected, no possession. Hell, those could both be 2 future countdown list categories too.

Wow, there are lots of really good zombie flicks. Never really thought about it before now, just sort of told myself there's a small handful of good zombie stuff and a ton of blah. I fear my top 13 is going to be pretty vanilla compared to my slasher list.

I realized real quick possession was going to be a gray area. But I'm not sure how you're planning on throwing out infection and have anything to choose from aside from voodoo? The vast majority of modern zombie storylines build on the premise of an infection of some type, either implied or as an actual plot point.

we can definitely debate the 28 days later zombie/infected thing to death...i'd rather not though.

for me, it will definitely make the list because whether the characters were actual zombies or not, the formula which the film used was most certainly in the vein of a zombie film.

that and it's sort of the scream of the zombie films where it reinvigorated and revived and entire genre for a new generation.

If this is gonna have films like REC and 28 Day Later and The Horde in it then its not a zombie theme.
Hey why not add Friday the 13th Parts 6,7,8, JGTH and Jason X in then cus he came out the ground as a zombie.
Its got to be films made as zombie films. Like ROTLD, DAWN, DAY, NIGHT , The Fulci stuff. Not stuff like Night of the Creeps cus someone died and got a space slug in em.

28 Days is a straight up zombie flick. Are you really gonna differentiate between Romero's films where bodies are infected with cosmic radiation and 28 where bodies are infected with a virus. You're gonna need an electron microscope to split that hair. Its the same general premise.

If Fulci is in-bounds (which agree he should be), then how can you say a [REC] is not??? Evil... supernatural... again, same general premise.

And face it, [REC] was filmed as a zombie flick. They shoehorned in the demonic elements in the sequel when they figured out there was more money to be made with future films.

I think once we're into this thing, we'll find most of the split-genre movies that make the grade are heavily weighted toward the zombie sub-genre, even if there are shades of other sub-genre included.

We're overthinking it folks.

I still don't consider INFECTED people to be zombies. I see Zombies as either 1: people who have been drugged and turned into mindless slaves. Or 2: people who have died and come back to life with a craving for flesh.
But that's just me. If people want to put 28 days or The Crazies or [REC] on their lists. Have at'em. New generation, new way of thinking. I imagine that when the flesh eating zombies came around, that the old school fans of drugged slave zombies didn't consider them zombies either.
Well it's time to move on. Can't live in the past forever right?

Just a heads up to list makers...Make sure you give release years for your films. There are a bunch of remakes and movies that have used the same titles and alternate titles, so we don't want any confusion.

Well I feel your pain regarding time moving on. And I thought we had some understandable and debatable points on the slasher list. But what we're talking about here are minor, MINOR differences in plot points that get us to the same place.

For all we know, Romero's original zombies ARE the result of a virus... either indirectly caused by the passing comet's radiation or it just coincidentally broke out at the same time as that comet. Point being, it's unimportant to the overall story, so much so that its glossed over, at least in R's first two Dead flicks. Whether or not you like or dislike 28 Days or its ilk, its disingenuous to infer that they don't count as a Romeroesque zombie films, they are practically stolen in most every important aspect.

While I'm trying to stay with what I consider "real" zombies, it doesn't/won't bother me at all, if a film like say, 28 Days Later makes the list despite my vote. The way I see it if a majority of the fine crew here at HS, a bunch of cool chaps and gals, deems such a movie a zombie flick I have no problem with that at all.

...and BTW, I loved 28 Days Later.

As was mentioned earlier, I think it was EA, the differences here are subtle and really have nothing at all to do with the story and how it's driven. The Slasher debate is much more understandable as it oftentimes means a totally different movie experience. But here it's not a big deal, and doesn't bother me at all.

All I'm saying is that to me in order for a flesh eating zombie to be a zombie, it had to be dead first. Re-animated. If it wasn't dead, it's just someone with a virus that's made them go crazy. You'll notice in Romero's zombie films that only the dead become Zombies. If you get zombie blood on you, you don't turn into one. If you get bitten, you turn. But you have to die first.

That's my take on it. Vote for what you will folks.

Now I'm really NOT trying to be an ass. But in Night, Dawn, Return and 28, if someone is alive and gets infected, they DO die first, they then re-animate. There is no substantial divide here IMHO.

I feel its alot more scandalous to have Snyder and Boyle introduce *fast* zombies, or have Romero crap all over his own invention with *smart* zombies, than to dismiss some great living dead cinema over make-believe pseudo-science technicalities.

Peace y'all. I know it's not important and a 40 year old with any pride shouldn't even be debating such things.

In 28 DL the infection only has to enter your blood stream and you turn. They don't die first. They have time to say oh shit and that's it. Instant virus infected crazy cannibal. lol. But whatever. My list is in and it's all back from the dead zombies.

I can't work out the PM system on this board. Can someone explain me how to send my list to Savage? I can't get it to work, and my list is done and everything.

Thanks. Hmm, that was what I tried before, and just did again. According to "my home" I still have zero sent PMs, though, that's what's confusing me.

Savage: Let me know if you've received anything. If I've sent you two pm's, then the most recent one contains the correct list and sorry for the extra spam.;)

I hope we'll have alot more participation as well. Did Mezza say he got something like 15 submissions for slashers? My list will be on the way in the next day or two. I may try to sneak in another zombie flick viewing or two that I've managed to miss up to this point. Just finished one as a matter of fact. Unfortunately it will not make the grade for my top 13, but it was enjoyable enough none the less.

Actually I've got over 30 titles that I've considered so far. Still feel like I've forgotten something tho. At first I thought my list of living dead movies would be a cinch, but I've ended up agonizing over this much more than the slashers. Its been fun remembering a few of these that have slipped my mind for awhile.

This may be true for alot of us, but I think zombies are what really immersed me into being a horror geek. I always liked horror from a early age and knew it spoke to me for some reason. But watching Romero's 1968 classic one Halloween night on MTV (when it was actually a network with some redeemable merit) really sealed the deal. I don't want to call it a spiritual experience, that'd be a li'l hokey, but relative to my experience with cinema it was a definable moment when I'd found something that I knew I'd call my own from that point forward.

I think Messiah said there were 15 entrants in his slashers thread.

I have fond memories of NOTLD from my childhood too. It scared the piss outta me. I also have fond memories of Dawn Of The Dead.

I am eagerly awaiting as many top 13 lists as possible here, guys. Please contribute. I'll even push back the deadline if I have to. I want everyone to have a chance to join in...

Sent my list. That was really fucking tough. I could swap out a good half of em with other movies that didn't make the cut. Mine felt very conservative aside from a couple. Oh well.

And if the classic Zombie Lake doesn't get the top spot, there's something wrong here.

Yes, that is alternate title for that movie.

What if a movie made the list twice because people put alternate titles? haha

DS, we trust in your knowledge of every alternate title for every zombie movie. It seems every movie has at least 5 or 6 different titles. lol

Hell of the Living Dead didn't make mine, but it is one of those "so bad it's good" ones that I own on DVD. Zombie Lake as well, though that one is so bad, it goes beyond good to just bad again but is soooo much fun to make fun of.

I don't know if I'll be able to get to this sunday or not. There was a death in my family and I'm not handling it very well. I'm still not well from the last tragedy I had to face and here comes another one.

I can't catch a fucking break. 2011 has been the worst year of my life. I hate to keep bitching all the time, but a person can only handle so much. The kids are still gone, I barely see my best friend who I need right now more than ever and now my favorite cousin is dead. I just talked to him 3 hours ago. Hell, I just detailed his truck today.

Sorry, Daniel. That's rough.

Slight change in plans:

I've been talking to Savage... he's sent me everyone's list so I'll be doing the tallying tomorrow. Will probably start unveiling the list on Monday as planned (Tuesday if I get too busy).

If you want to participate get me your lists by tomorrow, hopefully by 6p eastern or so. Peace.

I'm dealing with it okay. There's just been too much going on lately. On the bright side, I think I'm going to sever ties with my friend who's constantly bringing drama into my life. I love her to death, but at some point you gotta cut your losses.

She is the cause of about 99% of the emotional baggage I carry around and she simply isn't a very good friend anymore. I'm going to hurt, and I'm going to miss her, but she just ain't worth the hassle anymore.

Let the countdown begin!

13. Night of the Living Dead remake (32, 8)

Year: 1990 / Dir: Savini / IMDb

A quick word about the scoring. Each title will be followed by a set of numbers in parentheses. The first number is the sum of points received by the voting members. These points determined the actual order of our Top 13 zombie films. The second number is the number of votes the film received. So the movie above received a grand total of 32 points and 8 members voted for it.

A total of 14 members submitted a Top 13 list. Thanks, and enjoy the countdown!

The only remake to make it onto my list and it's well deserved if you ask me. Remakes usually suck. But this kicks ass.

Also the only remake on my list, which I decided to include last minute. It's really good, if definitely lacking the originals class and finesse.

Night of the Living Dead 1990 definitely made my list. I had it at number 8 and I'm happy that it made the list.

This is one of those remakes that was changed just enough that it was different from the original but retained enough of the major points.

The zombies also look great. I was still young enough to be scared watching this when it first came out. I was probably 13 when I saw it at a friend's place.

Oops, DUH! Thanks for the catch. I corrected it above.

Ultimately I did not include this on my 13, but it is a really good film. I cut it to have room for some other stuff, specifically because this was a remake and, while entertaining, didn't have anything important to add or fix from the original.

I think I had this one at #9, but I really don't remember. Something happened and I can't find the lists anymore. Anyways......terrific practical effects & nostalgia get me every time. This is one of the best remakes ever. Not as good as The Thing or The Fly, but still pretty damn awesome.

I voted for Re-Animator. Initially I had this way further up on my list, but I got to the point where I thought this borrowed much more heavily from Frankenstein than it did from zombie lore, so I knocked it quite a ways down my Top 13. That being said, really awesome movie. The Dr. Hill gags in the latter parts of the movie are just outstanding.

I had Re-Animator at number 11 on my list. I was having a hard time deciding where to put it. I initially had it higher but it got bumped down as I added some movies that I love more.

Re-Animator is an awesome movie and in my opinion well deserving to be on the top list.

Ah Yes...Re-animator!!!!

Not nearly high enough on the list but thank god it's up there anyway....this was one of those films that cemented my interest in the genre...great performance's....clever script and direction....ridiculous violence and gore and above all...some goddamned ORIGINALITY!

Think I had this at No.3...

Another of mine makes the list. I'm doin okay here. Big fan of this. It was a groundbreaker folks you have to admit. And as with the other guys it blew me away when I first saw it.
Hate the sequel though, its dreadful. The third is only marginally better as it too is poor.

Don't fret, man. I'm the guy who pushed to do this whole thing and then pawned it off on someone else. I feel bad for doing that, but I just couldn't put any effort into this after what happened the other day.

I think I'm officially on the way back up now. The shock of the death has worn off and my new "best friend" free life is off to a good start. YAY me. I deserve to feel better.

** MINOR SPOILERS ** I kept it for awhile, but 28 Days eventually fell off my list as well. Primarily because the scenes with the soldiers in the third act didn't hold my interest. I understand the point they wanted to getting across regarding society, but I was just more entertained when the zombies were the main antagonists. Still, very enjoyable zombie flick. Great job setting the mood, great zombie efx. Loved the scene in the tunnel. Tunnels sometimes just freak me out a little anyways.

I actually watched this for the first time as I was making the list, to see if it was a "must include" or whatever. I thought the setup was interesting enough, waking up in the hospital and everything, so at first I was positive, but after 40 minutes or so, I simply had to turn the film off - I just couldn't stand it. Modern digital MTV bullshit with shit zombies and annoying characters and actors. Definitely not for me.

I get what you're saying about the whole part with the soldiers, if the film has a weak point that's it. It is cool though when he goes all stealth on them and let's the infected in and everything falls apart. I had this on my list up pretty high if I recall, great one.

I was never big on Re-animator.
28 Days Later I think is an excellent movie, though I didn't have it on my list.

28 Days Later was on my list. I don't recall where, but it was on there somewhere.

I could get into the whole "is it or is it not a zombie film" just as easily as anyone, but the masses say it's a zombie film....and it's pretty awesome. I really, really like about four of Boyle's films and this is definitely one of them.

I think with the way the zombie concept has changed from voodoo to include, almost to a default, the living dead, that it can change even further to include the rage virus type. It's never been set in stone. When you get down to it, it's something that takes people over with as little as a bite, or swapping spit, and makes them bloodthirsty cannibals with no coherent thought or rationality. That's more akin to living dead zombies than living dead zombies are to mindless voodoo slaves.

The film does fit the zombie film archetype whether you feel it counts or not and I think that more than anything makes it qualify. Plus, it's a great film and the more great films added to the genre, the better. Especially with the utter shit that pollutes it. Enjoyable shit though.

It also says "re-invents" in the same sentence. And all that really means is the reviewer doesn't know what a zombie is.

Anyway, it's a good film. But in my books it's not a zombie film so I never voted for it. And maybe we should start calling vampires zombies too. After all, they're dead and drink blood. And that's closer to a zombie than someone with an infection.

But a vampire still has free will and a mind. They're essentially human but undead. Sometimes there's a conflict there, like a vampire doesn't want to feed but gives in. With zombies, there is not conflict. You're in reaching distance, you're food. No thought process, just food. I think what makes a zombie a zombie, more than anything, is the lack of human thought or rationality. It's been done away with. There are exceptions of course, but such is life.

Regarding the definition of a zombie flick, I said some of my peace at the beginning of this thread so I won't rehash those points. I do however, find it odd that many here consider Romero's zombie vision traditional, almost sacred; when in fact Romero himself reinvented, or re-imagined, what it means to be a zombie.

Also, there were lots of boos and hisses at the mention of including supernatural zombie flicks. But considering that voodoo in film is often (yet probably inaccurately) portrayed as evil and supernatural, those films are really more of a homogeneous hybrid compared to Romeroesque movies.

Don't get me wrong, I love Romero's early vision of zombies, they are by far my favs. I just think we're being way too short-sided.

And also, most importantly, vampire films have a completely different set of rules and conventions and a different feel. I'm sure everyone will agree that 28 Days Later mostly follows the zombie film pattern. To me it's actually a much bigger departure to have running and strong zombies, than it is to have zombies being infected rather than dead. Exactly because the running zombies change the feel of the film and the "rules" for approaching the zombies in quite a big way, while the infected thing more kind of bends the rules a little bit. That said, I still consider "runnings zombies" films to be zombie films, but it's a pretty drastic evolvement from the genre conventions that, say, Night of the Living Dead established.

I wanted to hate this movie when I went to see it but it won me over. Of course so much of it was different from the original which made it much easier to forget it was a remake of my favorite horror movie. It does have one thing I dislike it for though, this movie unleashed that hack Zack Snyder on the film going public. I had this on my list, its a fun one. No need to point this out by the way, but the original is infinitely superior.

Why people stick their tongues up the arse of this film is beyond me.

Its a moderate horror movie. And is a million miles away from eclipsing George's original.

Thats merely my humble own opinion though.

I agree it's not an equal to the original. Seldom does a redo accomplish this. Especially of the caliber of Romero's film. But this is a fun movie. I had this pretty far up my list, 4th maybe? Could have done without that tossing the salad comment BTW.

I mucho like the beginning sequence. That's quite an effective bit, trying to escape your own house, your crazed spouse trying to bite your face off. That was a great start. Hard not to compare this to 28 Days also. I definitely liked this one better. I thought 28 sidetracked to much near the end, and its more surreal to me, which is fine but overall I dug the vibe here more. I think Dawn also is leaps and bounds ahead of how they tackled the crumbling society issue. Where 28 seemed to tack it on at the end, its a major part of the plot here and integrated into the story more seamlessly. And, to my discredit, I just identify with the Dawn remake more because its more Americanized.

I am very torn on the slow/fast zombie issue. While I enjoy both kinds of films if they're done well, I do differentiate between the two. Definitely think they are all zombie films, but they're also two entirely different flavors. I could easily be in the mood for the original Dawn and not the remake, or vice versa.

Regarding Snyder, I've only seen Dawn and Watchmen so far, but I think they're both awesome flicks. Heard ALOT of mixed reviews on Sucker Punch, but that's kinda raising my interest level in it, need to get that one watched soon.

I had the Dawn remake a t number 12 on my list. I really enjoy it and I don't get all of the hate for it. In order for me to enjoy it, I have to forget that it's a remake of my favourite movie and take it on it's own. As an original movie, it's very good.

I haven't watched it in a while so I think I may just pop it in at lunch since I'm working from home today.

This one was also on my list. Wish I could remember where I had it, though. EA, Tony, could one of you guys please PM my list to me? I have no idea why, but it has totally disappeared.

Synder's Dawn is more of a "re-imagining" than a remake, and for the life of me I don't understand why most can't see that for themselves. The films are vastly different in nearly every way.....except for the fact that a large portion of both films has a mall backdrop.

I also wanted to hate this movie, but I don't hate it. Not at all. Why? Because it's f*cking badass. The acting, direction, editing, makeup and music are solid all the way around (the zombies in this movie look amazing, and the fact that they're marathon sprinters is terrifying). Synder's Dawn Of The Dead is a well made and well paced film that deserves to be on this list. In fact, I'll say this much about it. It's a much better film than 90% of the classic "euro" zombie films that so many fans love to talk about. Some of those movies are just awful....in every way.

Is this one as good as the original version? Hell no, Romero's Dawn is my all time favorite film and I can literally watch it every day. However, Synder put in a hell of an effort here and it really shows. That cat knows how to make a fun movie.

Snyders Dawn is OK. I watched it once or twice when it first came out, but I haven't watched it since. I first saw it when I was a Teachers Aid for my photography teacher. I swear we weren't slacking, it was just the end of the day and most of the students had already left for the day. While the opening scene was really good, I spent the rest of the running time wanting to blow Mekhi Phifers head off. Most. Irritating. Character. EvAr!

Overall a largely forgettable film.

I don't think Snyder is a bad director at all. I think this and Watchmen are incredible films. But he's definitely a highly visual guy. He has a certain visual style he likes and runs with it. DotD is probably his least stylized film which makes it feel a bit more natural to me. Then he did 300 and Watchmen which are about as stylized as could possibly be, one great, one okay. Didn't see Sucker Punch but it looks like a progression in style to me, seemingly at the expense of substance. Curious to see what he does with Superman.

Anywho, I think I had this one towards the middle of my list. It's just a great movie. It's a shame people can't get past the fact that it's a remake/reimagining of THE classic since it's only similar in name and backdrop.

I didn't think he was that irritating. Misguided, conflicted asshole though. Plus he kind of disappears for long stretches, presumably to care for his woman, so I kinda forget he's there till the scene where it all comes to a head.

In fact, I'll say this much about it. It's a much better film than 90% of the classic "euro" zombie films that so many fans love to talk about. Some of those movies are just awful....in every way.

Which euro titles are 10% better, if I may ask?

None of them are 10% better, but about 10% of them might be better depending on who ya ask.

If I'm being completely honest, I like Synder's Dawn of the Dead better than any of the euro "classics" I've seen. I think I've seen them all at this point too, and in many cases I'm so disinterested that I can barely finish them. I do give style points to a few of them and I may have even put 1 higher on my list (more because of the impact it has on fans than anything else, though).

If you showed me copies of Snyder's Dawn Of The Dead & the 10 best euro zombie films and told me I had to watch of one them or die, I'd watch DOTD every time.

So I did end up watching Dawn remake again today. I stand by my word that it is a pretty awesome film. After watching it I wish I would have put it higher on my list.

Just looked over my list again. I didn't have a single euro "classic" listed higher than the DOTD remake. In fact I didn't have any ranked at all.

Guess I don't consider any of them to be classics.

I have never cared for euro horror, Howler. It just ain't for me, man. 28 Days Later, Shaun Of The Dead and [REC] are the best euro horror films I've ever seen...and one of them isn't a horror film.

Ah normality has returned. A truly wonderful film. Even if there is no Manchester morgue in sight. I had this. But as I reflect back I should have had it much much higher than were I put it. The first 5 seconds of this film are better than the previous film in this poll ( IMO of course )

Even though I sent my list in too late so as to not be included in the top 13, I think I'll pretend it did...

Great to see this gem up there...Has some real atmosphere this one and Grau really made the most of the rural english locations...some think it's too slow...just measured, that's all.

Strangely I omitted this from my list at the last minute for reasons unknown!?!? Don't remember what replaced it but I'm sure it was an error...but my list never made it anyway...so who gives a fuck?

Actually, neither have I. Was trying to watch this before turning in my list but couldn't make the time. Just based on the trailer (which is a shitty thing to do) I'm doubting I would have ranked this. However, there were some good scenes, hoping to catch up to this one soon.

Oh Christ I hate this movie. I knew this would be on the list eventually, at least its not in the top 5. Tomorrow back to the horror movies, and onward, unless Zombieland or Dead Alive plan to rear their heads.

Edit: Not that all zombie movies with comedy elements are bad. Return of The Living Dead is classic and better make it on the list. Fingers crossed

I had Shaun at 9th so I nailed this one pretty close. I agree that I didn't want a bunch of comedies on my list either, but it was just too hard to leave this one off. While its a goofball film, they got the vibe and the elements correct. Also enjoyed Fido and Doghouse quite a bit, but they didn't quite translate the horror aspects well enough for me to give them a spot on my 13.

SOTD is a great parody. The whole thing is played for laughs and there are some good ones. But on a best zombie movie list it doesn't quite make the cut. There is only room for one zom-com on such a list and that's Return of the Living Dead. I didn't vote for SOTD.

Shaun of the Dead definitely deserves to be on the list. Gotta love the shoutouts to Romero from DotD cues used in the soundtrack to little moments and quotes.

I looked at it from that standpoint as well. But much like yourself and others here, I knew that without a doubt Return was making my 13, so that would have meant not only dropping Shaun, but also Dead Alive. So ultimately gave up on that line of thinking.

In retrospect, I might have put Shaun toward the back end on a different day, but I really kept kicking myself in the head trying to figure out an acceptable order. Eventually just had to settle on something and sent it.

EDIT... I did want to add how much I enjoyed the cast of survivors in this one. Yes, they played it for laughs, but it was an interesting ensemble all the same. It wasn't so much that the world as they knew it had possibly just ended, but more like they were really being inconvenienced.

but also Dead Alive

That didn't make my list either. It was a close call though. I wouldn't complain if it makes the cut.

Next up, Joel M. Reed's, Night of the Zombies?

I'm liking it so far, aside from the living dead at the manchester morgue.

Those euro movies are just, ummm, well, I just don't like them.

I was sorta thinking the opposite. Can you elaborate on that a little?

I liked the slasher list well enough, but I think there are some definite oddball choices included.. Sleepaway Camp at #3 and Scream at #6 don't make sense to me. But it's a small sampling were talking about. And all these polls represent, at best, is the current flavor of our particular board. I would be willing to bet if we had 100 folks voting, both of these lists would be much more vanilla. No way would you see Sleepaway Camp or Let Sleeping Corpses Lie in their respective lists. Sad to say, but your HS votes could very well be the most influential votes you cast in your entire lifetime.

The list is, so far, very heavy on the newer films/remakes and the comedy. I had NOTLD remake and Re-Animator on my list, as well, but could not stand 28 Days Later and DOTD remake. I don't think a film like Shaun of the Dead has any place on this list, no matter how funny it might be.

On the upside, I watched Let Sleeping Corpses Lie for the first time last night, and I really enjoyed that.

There aren't many boundaries Dead Alive didn't push. Campy goodness, mayhap too far over the top. But impossible not to enjoy. Certainly one of the bloodiest films I've watched. This includes the only zombie birth that I can immediately recall.

And if I don't see at least one Fulci on this list I may have to go on a killing spree.

Killing spree? I'll bring the ammo Hower! Or at least some half time oranges!

As I previously mentioned...my list never made it but it did indeed have no less than two(maybe three!) Fulci numbers in it....hell...even that hack Umberto Lenzi managed to get a title into my final 13!

And as always, for all the wrong reasons...

And by the way...as a Kiwi it is wonderful to see DEAD ALIVE on the list....this film is PURE (almost)ZOMBIE! Loved it on it's release...love it even more now!

I love Dead Alive. I can't believe that when I was making my list it didn't even cross my mind!

I don't understand why people are pissed that it made the list. Eight people voted for it and it made it for good reason. I would have voted for it too had I not mistakenly omitted it.

I can only think of one Fulci film, maybe 2, that really deserves to be on this list. I think this one is shaping up to be a very nice, diverse list. Sorry it's not the "13 best Euro Zombie films" like some of you seemed to expect.

And Shaun of the Dead isn't good only because it was funny. It is a genuinely great zombie film.

Regarding Dead Alive, great movie. "I kick ass for the LORD!!!" I had it at number 7 on my list so I should get like bonus points or something.

You know Zombie is going to be on this list, Howler.

As for Dead Alive, yeah, I voted for it. Had it at #10. That's pretty much where I feel it should go. It's a badass zombie movie that just so happens to be funny. I could say the exact same thing for Shaun Of The Dead and ROTLD.

As for the list turning out the way it has and whether or not it looks like horror fans played a hand in it, I'll say bullshit. This list includes films like Dead Alive and the living dead at manchester morgue. Those films are hardly known to people outside the horror community. While it ain't my cup of tea, TLDAMM is a classic.....and so is Dead Alive.....and so is Shaun of the Dead. So, yeah, this list is shaping up nicely.

I think those who are upset are just a little butthurt about films like Cemetary Man and The Gates Of Hell not making the cut yet...if at all (neither deserve to in my opinion).

I want to say something else.

I have openly downplayed the european zombie films because I really, really don't like them. In fact, I think they're basically unwatchable. However, I think Zombie deserves to be on this list, if for no other reason than it's loved by so many people. I ain't one of them, and I intentionally left it off of my list (basically because I was being a dick), but I really do think it deserves a spot. I'll say this too. It's the only fulci film that should even have a remote shot at making this list.

I love the 70s/80s Euro zombie films as much as anyone, but I made a good chunk of my list with films that I just enjoy to watch more often. I have to be in the right mood to sit down and watch Hell of the Living Dead or Nightmare City or Burial Ground. Shit, that's why I put Dead Snow on mine because I just love watching that goofy movie time and again. I knew it wouldn't make it though. I feel my list well represents the best of the genre in my opinion, but the borderline ones I put in the last 3-4 spots were films that I just love.

And Zombie will be on the list. I know many of these choices have been disputed but we're halfway there and you know the top 6 are gonna be the tried and true films of the genre and I doubt many people are going to complain.

Ooooh, take it easy. I wasn't implying that people here aren't "true" horror fans or anything like that. I just think that this particular list has some unfortunate choices, in my oppinion. Dawn remake, 28 Days Later, Dead Alive (what are you talking about, Savage? That film is SUPER wellknown - I'd say I probably know more people who's seen this than Night of the Living Dead.) and Shaun of the Dead are the type of films I would expect to get mentions in a casual conversation with someone not overtly into zombie or horror films - not on a board like this. But anyway, I guess I'm just surprised that so many peoples tastes are leaning so much towards the newer mainstream zombie films as well as the comedy ones. As I've said earlier, I was personally hoping for some more oddball choices on this list, because I don't really consider myself an expert on the subject, and would like some new input.

The slasher list was really nice because it had most of the known classics as well as a few somewhat weirder choices - Sleepaway Camp at 3 is AWESOME in my oppinion. Including Dawn remake and 28 Days Later on this list feels like including I Know What You Did Last Summer and Final Destination on the slasher list, know what I mean? My list definitely includes some choices that some people will find dodgy, though, so I guess you guys can dispute MY tastes when that time comes, hehe.

All this said, I'm sure a lot of good stuff will make the list from now on, though. I'll be very surprised if at least the Dead trilogy and Zombie Flesh Eaters don't show up. I'll also be surprised if another meh comedy film (Return of the Living Dead) doesn't show up.

Don't mean to be a prick, was just expecting something else - know what I'm saying?

If I stopped 10 people on the street and asked them if they'd seen Dead Alive, 6 of them wouldn't know what I was talking about, 1 would have heard of it and the other three may have seen it.

If I stopped 10 people on the street and asked them if they'd seen Night Of The Living Dead, maybe 1 of them wouldn't know what I was talking about, 2 would have heard of it and the remaining 7 may have seen it.

Dead Alive isn't nearly as well known as you think it is, man. It's well known among people like us, but not the masses.

...and satirejohn, how the hell can you call ROTLD "meh"? That movie is almost universally loved by horror fans. I know two people who dislike it, and both are "pink ribbons and bubblegum pop music loving" females who think shit like Dear John and Grey's Anatomy are the best shit ever.

I'd also like to add that I have seen your list, satirejohn. At least half of the films you listed didn't stand a chance of making the cut. That's not me questioning your tastes AT ALL. It's just me being realistic.

I know I'm pretty alone in disliking Return, but with that on there almost HALF of the list will be horror-comedies (one of which I voted for myself (Re-Animator), and one of which is pretty much not even a horror film (Shaun)). That's a bit extreme isn't it? I would much rather see Return on the list than, say, Shaun of the Dead, though.

Yeah, I'm not so much concerned with my own choices not making the list - honestly I wasn't counting on something like Rabid cracking the top 13. But like I said, I was hoping for some more interesting choices at least.

I voted for Dead Alive, Zombieland, Return..., and Shawn of the Dead. All are great. We are all fortunate in my opinion to have had 2 classics (Zombieland and Shawn of the Dead) come along rather recently.

Am I not a horror nut? I would most definitely say, hell yes, I sure as fuck am. And actually, I am more a zombie freak than any other genre. And I have been for, well let's see, about 25+ years I'd say?

These types of lists turning out somewhat unlike how each of us expects, or sees things, is sort of the point. It's what makes these things interesting. If we each cast our lists, knowing that it's how it would come out, well, that would be pretty retardedly boring and pointless waste of time on all out parts.

And as far as almost half the list being comedies, I for one can easily say that the 4 films I mentioned above, 3 of which are presently on the list, and all of which will almost certainly make the list, if this had been a top 20, or top 50, etc. these are still the 4 comedies that would make the list. In other words, the only reason it's near half, (more like near a third actually) is because the list is only 13 long. Increase the list number and that ratio would plummet almost instantly.

Also some food for thought. If a "Demon movie" list was done, would Evil Dead 2 not be on the list, and if it were would that make me some sort of horror poser?

Very true. And the things that go on in the movie are certainly not mainstream either.

I would also point out that even if it were more well known should that somehow change it's validity and consideration for the list? I thought this list was based on what each individual considered to be true zombie classics, not on being "most obscure"

95% of the time I abhor comedy horror, like for instance Shaun of the Dead and Dead Alive, but I love Return of the Living Dead and Zombieland. Am I annoyed that a lot of the euro stuff I hold sacred isn't making the list, no. A lot of people seem to dig the comedy stuff so that's alright, its what a collective list is about, averaging the choices. I wouldn't mind if they were back between 13 and 10 though. When this is over I can't wait to see everyones list. Just imagine if we did a Hammer list, people will be sending each other mail bombs over that shit.

I plan to do demonic films next...if I have any say.

I still think we have to do an all time, all subgenres list.

Would of course have to be more than top 13, though.

Yes! Making this list was tough enough since there's a good 15-20 films that I left off that on any other day may have made it.

Here's some Euro flare for those who think it was omitted from the list. I love City of the Living Dead and it's one of the Fulci movies that I watch the most. From the great gore to the nonsensical ending, everything about it is awesome to me. I had it at number 5 on my list.

As for those complaining about the list. It was compiled using the input of horror fans. You can't get truer than that. Also, there is nothing wrong with newer movies making the list, at one point all of the classics were new.

Wow, someone's on the rag, and apparently... it's me. Apologizes satirejohn, not exactly sure where that came from. I seem to be taking things a bit too personally of late. I'll see if I can't curtail the girly hysterics a wee bit, eh.

And I think you made some fair points about the list not looking like a professional horror fan's, especially when it comes to the comedy mixes. Also, I do think genre fans start to poo poo mainstream offerings. I guess because when we enjoy a certain niche, we come to somehow disrespect the folks who jump on the bandwagon once in a while. I certainly see that position in music, but I don't really differentiate between mainstream or not in movies, I'm just interested if the film speaks to me on some level.

Now, City of the Living Dead... this is maybe my favorite Euro horror from the 70s/80s period, even above Suspiria. The plot is kinda all over the place, but I just really love the vibe of this film. I had it at 6th overall. More from me later, I got shit to do this morning.

Now there's not a lot of spaces left, and I guess some of the films I took for granted would place highly, won't get a spot at all. Day of the Dead? Return of the Living Dead? Oooh, the suspense!

Personally, I don't think there should be any further lists... at least, not for awhile. I've seen this exact same thing on other forums where I've played the top 13 slashers. It quickly gets run into the ground and the fun evaporates from it. Of course, that's just my opinion.

Romero's worst zombie films are more watchable than Fulci's best...

I love horror films, Howler. You should know that, man. Give me some credit.

When I watch a movie, I like to see and hear a cohesive story. It doesn't have to be a great or even good story, but a story has gotta take place. With some of these euro films there's nothing going on but a string of scenes that often have nothing to do with anything. I'm not going to sit here and say that it's always like that, but it often is.

I don't have all euro horror either. I just don't get into the zombie films from Fulci's heydays. I love [REC] and that can and should be considered "euro". I enjoyed Frontier(s). Hell, I like a lot of the more modern euro movies. I just can't get into Fulci. I have tried to get into these films numerous times, man. I really, honestly, genuinely have. I've given them a fair shake. Some of them I have watched 6 or 7 times. If you don't like a film after 7 viewings, it's pretty safe to say you're never gonna like it...

I like Zombie well enough, but it didn't make my 13. Didn't feel like I had room for this or for Nightmare City. Lots of iconic scenes in this one tho. The splinter in the eyeball and zombie vs. shark. I'm not exactly a fan of the shark scene as that's a damn active, dare I say fast, zombie swimming around down there, but it's certainly different. Very much enjoyed the ending to this one with the showdown at the clinic and the closing scene on the bridge.

This is a very confusing series when it comes to the titles. Is the entire *Zombi* series popular in Europe or elsewhere? I know Zombi 2 did very well. Don't think I've managed to see any of the later sequels. It'd be great if someone could comment on Parts 3 thru 5 (I know they're sequels in name only), and let me know your thoughts on those.

A bit lower than I was hoping, but what the hell.

Pretty funny if this means, that the top three will be the three Romeros.

When Argento is ON, he's tough to beat. Unfortunately, he's been suffering a lot lately. The cat could make a mean giallo, though.

Two of the great Films of my youth...and my middling years. GATES OF HELL was particulary ridiculous, atmosphere thick...and of course THAT scene with the axe at the cematary...Ahhhhh Chris George...How many times mate, honestly!? Your steady but chin up decline was my nirvana! GATES was of course not at all like lovecraft, but who really cared at this point? Those vanishing Zombies! Fucking Fantastic! And ZOMBIE of course being one of the very first extreme spaghetti jaunts to catch my eye...I've always said it though...Fulci was a hack of considerable talent and ability and it's a shame he had some bad luck in life and cinema. I love his Cinema -including many of his pre horror excursions - which too be honest wasn't always the case...but time has indeed given me a little perspective on his movies...and his life.

I voted for Zombie....Love Gates of hell as well but it may have been nudged out by NIGHTMARE CITY!(need to check that)

Cornball Zombies with machine guns...running....amok! Obviously this is the better film... important even!

Still waiting on THE BEYOND though.

Zombie, in my opinion, is the only Lucio Fulci film that deserves to make in onto this list. I didn't vote for it, but it doesn't bother me that it's included. It's nice to know that Romero is going to be the man on this list. He is the king of the zombie film.

Zombie has so much good stuff in it. The only thing that bothers me slightly every time I watch it is towards the end when they're throwing the Molotovs to start the wall of fire. One is thrown and we see that the fire is started, and yet when each one is thrown it seems the fire hasn't been started yet, until the camera cuts away again to show the fire. Minor issue, and actually rather amusing to me.

Romero's worst zombie films are more watchable than Fulci's best...

I'm starting to think you're not a horror fan at all after that statement. I love George to death but there is no way in hell his last three films even come close to the goodness that are Fulci's Zombie, City of the Living Dead or The Beyond.

I like Fulci, and I agree that Romero's more recent zombie work has been lacking (although I liked Diary reasonably well). But I have always felt that without Romero's Dawn of the Dead, aka Zombi, there would be no basis for Fulci's Zombie, aka Zombi 2. In fact, some would argue that George resurrected Fulci's career when Dawn was exported to European audiences.

Quote:

It seems to me like the european flicks tend to be more gory AND more arty. Both = big win in my book.

I think that's where alot of the divide lies. In particular with your average Western audience....

(More gory = ) + (more arty = ) =

Again, I'm generalizing, but Yanks in particular don't always get artsy. Take Cemetery Man for instance. I find alot of aspects of this film pretty awesome. But the farther along the story progresses, the more perplexed I get, until finally we get to that ending and I feel like a complete buffoon cause I just didn't understand the symbolism involved... truthfully I still don't.

Sorry bout the shot DS. I know you love our genre.

Actually, the list is looking a lot better with City and Zombie on it. I had Zombie at #4.

And Mr Dead said no comment cause he doesn't like Zombie very much. He's also waiting to see Zombiez on the list.

O'Bannon gives us the best Zom-com to date imo. Well deserving the number 4 spot.

And thank you Mr Russo for giving us a great comedic zombie film and unofficial sequel to NOTLD. To bad the series ended up going to shit.

Well, my first post on this timed out, so let me start again since I have nothing but free time on my hands.

I had Return on my list at #2, but I can live it resting in the top 5. It's almost a wash between this and my first pic. I don't think there's anything about this movie that isn't awesome. Incredibly great story, love the casting, slam bang efx (with no bullshit CGI thank you very much). Dan O'Bannon is one of the high-master geek gods.

I just consider this a straight-up horror movie, despite the campy humor and goofball antics. There's something about the delivery of the comedy in RotLD and Re-Animator that differs from say a Shaun or Doghouse. I think with the former the laughs come in a more organic form, whereas In Shaun, you have alot of one-liners and zingers that are delivered in a more staged way that you would expect from a traditional comedy.

One of the things that RotLD brings to screen that Romero didn't do was the zombies exhuming themselves from their graves. This doesn't happen in Romero's films, although I think casual fans usually give him credit for it. It's easy to sub-consciously imagine that happing, especially in the original Night. Wondering... what are the first zombie films that do show zombies digging themselves up? There some of that in Children Shouldn't Play.

It's interesting that Snyder and Boyle take flak for fast zombies, but really RotLD is (I think) the first fast zombie movie. Plus, at least a few these zombies talk as well.

I could gush on and on about this movie. Tarman is awesome and scary as hell. The bit with the survivors talking with woman zombie's upper torso tied to the gurney was interesting. I still twist in my seat when I recall the split canine cadaver scene. I do understand why some zombie fans might not dig the non-traditional elements, but IMO they knocked this one out of the park.

Not being a jerk, but how come overrated?

Oh, and being a soundtrack guy, gotta say the music was spot on. Great Carpenterish type backgrounds with some heavy stuff mixed in. Too many times filmmakers add hard rock tracks when they just don't fit the scene or the mood, but they integrated well on Return.

Seeing Return as a kid I was terrified. I had no idea it was even suppose to be funny. It just scared me.

I had Return at number 7 on my list. I love it. It gave us such a memorable zombie with Tar man.

I agree the music is great. Well, for some reason I just thought it was a pretty boring film. I was pretty excited when I saw it the first time, because it was a zombie film with punks. Probably the only thing I'm MORE into than horror films is punkrock and hardcore, so that was a cool touch for me. And it's pretty funny with that girl who's basically naked throughout most of the film. But aside from that, nothing about the film has really made an impact on me. I guess I just prefer films with a more "serious" atmosphere - even though I agree ROTLD is much more of a true horror film than Shaun of the Dead, and I do like Re-Animator, which I guess is the exception to the rule.

In theory I want to enjoy this film, but I just don't. I might give it another shot at some point.
