Yeah, I consider THE THING to be a horror film through and through. I feel the exact same about EVENT HORIZON.
I consider The Silence Of The Lambs to be a horror film as well...

Pushing the AGREE button now. I know sometimes when something goes mainstream, the professional geek can be tempted to abandoned it. But Silence is a straight-up horror IMO. The score alone is enough to make you go turn on the light.

You right there, this is one of the best sci-fi horrors EVER made!
There are not that many movies that I consider mixed genre. When films are a mix, I typically think of them as primarily this or that. In the case of The Thing and Event Horizon, those are just horror films to me. But I try hard not to concentrate on that kind of categorization too much, and the same with music. It's more about do I like this or not. That being said, I am a huge sci-fi fan and I think it frequently mixes with horror with grand results.

I don't remember who mentioned this. but I just recently saw that version that begins with all the characters getting biography's. a narrator telling about each character. weird shit. Who's seen this??? don't make me go to spill your guts with it.
A little late with the reply, and I know it's been covered elsewhere, but this version was cut for television. I don't know which network trotted it out first. I can only vaguely recall this as well, although with YouTube and the like being around, it's completely possible I saw it there. Usually TV cuts are the pits, however there is a (CBS version???) cut of Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan that is far superior to the theater and standard DVD. In fact, it even includes scenes (mostly extended scenes) that are not on the special editions either. I had it recorded on a VHS tape for the longest time, wish I still had that, maybe it's still hanging around here somewhere if the tape hasn't fused together at this point.

This moment is the best.
Tons of great sequences herein. But my personal favorite is the first little gag they do when MacReady is testing everyone. Jumped outta my seat the very first time, that was fantastic. I wish we could turn those little moments off in our brain and get to experience them again for the very first time.
I think the same thing! Just that moment when he's like "We'll do you last.." SCREEEACH!!!

Where I get confused is when I watch films like Se7en. I wanna call it horror, but it just doesn't grab me the same way a true horror film would. Don't get me wrong, it's a damn fine movie, I just don't know if I should put it in the horror section of my film collection or not.

I think it's just as much horror as Silence of the Lambs. Especially the part with "sloth" in the bed and whatnot.

The Thing is probably my favourite movie after Halloween. It's interesting that it was a box-office and critical failure. It was up against E.T. in the theatres, as I recall, so it got its ass handed to it. The critics despised it as well--it was nominated for several Razzie awards--the soundtrack actually won the Razzie for worst music, if memory serves. I could be wrong--it was at least nominated.
I guess I can sort of understand--much of the music was very minimal--but that's exactly why it was so great, IMO.
Also, it's important to understand that this wasn't exactly a remake of The Thing From Another World. That movie and Carpenter's The Thing were both adapted from the same novella, Who Goes There, and Carpenter's version is much more faithful to the source material. The various Bodysnatchers movies are also considered to have derived from this same source.
