Yeah I had plans to see this in the theater but just never got around to it. It's hard for me to get excited enough for a movie to justify dropping 12 bucks for a ticket. I still hold out hope that I will enjoy this one when I do finally watch it though, in spite of the reviews.

I haven't been reading reviews but I keep seeing professional reviewers giving 3 and 4 out of 5 starts posted around the webasphere, so (just based on that) it could have been much worse.

i read a box office report about the disastrous opening of THE THING among other releases that week.
The report noted that it seems the audience has had enough of remakes and that the marketing, specifically a prequel using the exact same title as the older remake probably hurt its cause...and then I smiled.
THE THING is the perfect example of what has been wrong about the current decade of remakes. Movies like the thing from another planet and the fly had room for improvement, new technologies that could push the story in new as yet unseen realms of film. It could take already good films and make them BETTER.
CGI whether you like it or not is not a good leap forward when trying to replicate the amazing practical effects of the 80's. And the screenwriters and directors aren't really making BETTER movies, the studios are just doing a cash grab. I'm sure they were doing the same thing back in the day, but at least the filmmakers had some artistic integrity.

I was psyched to see THE THING, but didn't get to. Once again, WAY too much personal bullshit going on (2011 has been the shittiest year of my life). I will see it as soon as I can, though....and I have tried to take the bad things I've heard with a grain of salt.
The complaints I hear are along the lines of;
- there is no tension in this film. any time someone is suspected of being THE THING, they are exposed almost instantly. - things are immediately explained in full in this film at nearly every turn. - things are dumbed down to a ridiuculous degree. - the cgi sucks at times.
I've heard one or more of those complaints from several people, but I'm going to hold judgement until I have a chance to actually watch the movie myself. I love Carpenter's version. It's one of my favorites. I really want to like this movie too...

All of those criticisms are fairly accurate, though they sound like they made the movie worse than they did. All in all I definitely enjoyed it and actually found myself liking it a lot more on a 2nd viewing as I noticed a lot of subtle touches that I missed the first time around.
I would say that my biggest criticism with it though would be with how they handled the beginning. Everything moved too fast and before you knew it they had excavated the Thing, it woke up, and people were assimilated. I loved the buildup of Carpenter's as there's so much that happens before the Thing ever shows itself. By that time you're already immersed in the mystery and you're almost as invested as the characters in finding who's the Thing.
On a more nit-picky note, it bothered me that they didn't really showcase the language barrier. That could have been a great tool for tension and paranoia in the group that the 1982 film never had but they never really capitalized on it.
Still, all in all it's a solid movie and you can tell the creators respected the 1982 film and really wanted to add to the story.

I sat through this one earlier in the evening. All the complaints I heard were dead on, but the movie is still ok. Good, but not great...and defnitely not awful. Shut your brain off and you'll have an ok time with it.

Savage and I must have went to the same showing, I just caught this tonite as well. And most happy to report that I was pleasantly surprised. Numero uno, they didn't out and out blow it, nor does it tarnish the 82 Thing. Agree with some of the above comments, definitely thought it was respectful of the source material. I won't say its great, but I'll go a far as giving it a *really good* and a ata'boy. Considering at one point we were going to get some variation of this on SyFy... blech. The worst thing in the movie is some of the CGI. However, there are an equal number of CGI shots that they pulled off quite well. It's also true that several scenes did come across as a rehash of JC's film, but once more, they also explored some new territory in the prequel. I thought the tension level was decent, the acting was generally good, was reasonably happy with the gore, and the music was fantastic. And yeah, tho they didn't make a blaring point of it, they certainly left themselves room for a sequel, tho I wouldn't expect to see that based on theater receipts.

Well lets be honest it was never ever ever ever ever gonna top The Thing. Sheesh nothing ever will because its thje best film ever made full stop. But. I did kind of enjoy this. The over use of CGI was a hindrance sadly, but I prepared myself for it. The helicopter scene was pooply done. But it had plus points. And in this world of poor and bad reimagine-ings ( hows that for a new word ) I thought it held up.

It's quite odd that you asked for feedback regarding a new word....but I don't want to give you feedback for it.
...but "pooply", now that's a word I can get behind. Come to think of it, the word "poorly" is now dead to me...

One thing ( no pun intended ) I didn't like in this version was how fast and ferocious the Thing/creatures were. In Carpenters it was oozey , kind of fast in some ways. But here the creatures are like lightning. Of course its to paper over the CGI but it becomes less effective. Notable being how fast the female chases the woman down the hallway. Also the creature wants to imitate andtake over its host quickly and fast. So why does it smudges faces with the guy, and spend the rest of the scene staying that way and not continuing its take over. It just crawls around that way in pursuit of the others. Plus it doesn't look burnt in JCs version.
