I'm not sure how to classify this movie. It doesn't seem to belong to any forum category below. I don't know why it took me so long to see this.
I'd seen the DVD for rent several times, and it looked, well, dull and gloomy. It came on the Dusk channel the other night, so I thought I'd give it a chance.
Wow. This is a very good movie. Chris Bale is almost skeletal here, having starved himself for the role and lost something like 60 pounds. That is dedication.
The story is not entirely original--its influences are evident--but it is, in my opinion, quite powerful, poignant, and disturbing. The ending is brilliant in its simplicity, shedding new light on everything that went before.
The "fun-house" scene has become one of my favourite sequences in horror movie history--it actually quite disturbed me.
This is very much an underrated movie, in my opinion. Highly reccommended.

You got me intrigued. I an unfamiliar with this title but it sounds cool to me from your description and impression.
Added to Netflix queue (which is getting loooong.)

I had totally forgotten about it about The Machinist. It's a pretty good movie...

Man, my last post looks really stupid. I've got to stop posting when I've had no sleep for days.
Larry, you might find out that I'm not a bad guy.

It's somewhat ironic that this thread is so sleep-inducing.
I never thought you were a bad guy, Danny. Just a pain in my ass. I went overboard a couple times. That was regrettable. I think (hope) it's all done now.

I saw this when it first came out and really enjoyed it though for some reason have never thought to revisit it. Christian Bale's dedicated performance is reason enough to watch this film. And I would also agree that it is highly underrated. The only remotely horror category I would put this in would be psychological thriller.
Oh and that funhouse scene creeped me the fuck out as well!

We'll be fine as long as calling me Danny doesn't become a habit...

I'm watching this is on IFC Canada right now.Good movie. I think Bale maybe went a little to far in getting into character. He really is lucky he didn't kill himself.

He was sickly looking to say the very least.

You don't like Danny? This might seem a bit ironic/strange, but my best friend here in town is a transplanted American whose birth name is Daniel, but we all know him as Danny. Yeah, he's an American named Daniel, and he's my best friend. That sounds made-up or something, but it's the truth. It's really odd.
Anyway, Daniel, duly noted.

The following link is only for those who have seen The Machinist, or those who don't intend to see the movie at all.
If you haven't seen The Machinist, and intend to do so, then "do not" click on the link. Not that it's a total spoiler, but it will ruin a good segment of the movie for you.
Okey-doke?
