The Children - (1980)

I watched this B-movie from 1980 last night. Goes like this. Some sort of gas escapes from a power plant. Kids ingest the gas, and turn into zombies who want to bite their parents. (Gas only affects kids, not adults.) Not a bad ride, definitely a bit cheesy, but fairly enjoyable. The only thing that makes the children “zombielike” is their fingernails are black. That's it. Well, that and the way they lumber around slowly. But as far as zombie appearance - black fingernails. Loving zombies as I do, this was a missed opportunity, as zombie children in cool makeup can be quite creepy indeed. But here we just get fingernails. It fits into the story this way I suppose as the parents think their children are normal upon looking at them, when in fact they are not.
The music- Throughout my viewing of this, the music, while certainly fitting and effective, irked me a bit because it sounded so damn familiar. It constantly sounded like the strings used in the Friday the 13th music score. I looked it up after and the music was composed by none other than Mr. Harry Manfredini, so that solves that mystery. All in all a fairly enjoyable time, although it hasn't aged all that well. Anyone familiar with this? Any thoughts?
----------------------------
Kids hug parents, like this (notice the black fingernails)

And parents end up like this...
-------------------- "You're a gentleman," they used to say to him. "You shouldn't have gone murdering people with a hatchet; that's no occupation for a gentleman."

I don't think I've ever heard of this before. And since I like a little cheese, I'm going to have to check this out.

I hadn't heard of this one either. Interesting take on zombies. I will have to catch up to this one.

Excellent. Curious to hear your thoughts on it after viewing it.

Thanks much Knifey! I really enjoyed that. It had great atmosphere and felt a lot like a F13 movie thanks to Manfredini's score. I'm guessing the score's are so similar because both movies came out the same year. This has to have the weirdest way of killing mutants/zombies i have ever seen.
I'll be picking up the dvd eventually.

Hahahaha. Ok, serious now. I think the movies are probably similar, but I don't think it's a remake. You are talking about the 2008 film right?

Very glad you enjoyed it Howler. Indeed a unique means of murder - the "Embrace of Death"
Unfamiliar with the 2008 movie The Children, but looking over its info, I also do not believe it's a remake of this 1980 flick.

I'm shocked that so many people have never heard of this!
There's also a UK remake which isn't half bad that came out couple years ago.
