NOTLD is just about the only horror remake I really like. The Toolbox murders and Black Christmas were alright, but for the most part remakes suck.
The Thing, The Blob, Invasion of the Body Snatchers(both), The Fly, and The Omega Man are all great remakes, but I would consider them more Sci-Fi than horror.

What about non-horror remakes like Scarface? say Howler do you think the ones from the 80's offered the best ones?

I don't think Scarface is a remake. they just borrowed the title.
As a rule, I don't like remake's. And I despise Michael Bay.
Back in the 70's and 80's they were remaking films that were originally B&W. And for the most part, weren't really remakes. More literary adaptions than anything. They weren't being made as cash grab's like they are now. Directors cared and had visions. But more importantly the studio heads weren't as greedy back then and actually cared about putting out good movies. Those days are over and I think unfortunately, we have Romero to blame for that.
NOTLD 90, although a great movie that a lot of care and love went into, was made for the sole purpose of making cash. I fully sympathize in Romero's doing this because of the fortune he could have made from the original, but didn't because of the whole public domain debacle. But remaking for cash was born that day and we have suffered because of it.

So your saying the days of good remakes like The Thing are over?
What do you think of modern horror that is like teen horror parodies like Scream or torture porn like Saw or Hostel?
How come no one complains about the remakes to The Thing or The Fly?

No one complains about The Thing or The Fly remakes because they are very good. Does anyone know someone who grew up with the originals? Perhaps they felt the same way about those remakes as we do about the current ones.
It would help if today's remakes weren't like a slap in the face. Sure, it's hard to come up with original ideas but it's not like it's impossible. They are obviously out there. The guys in the suits most likely want their cheques to keep coming in though so they will continue to do the same thing.
It's the same as gas. Obviously cars do not need to run on gas anymore but then a lot of people wouldn't be very, very rich any more so nothing will change.

As long as Michael Bay has his hands in them. Yes. But it depends on the film maker and studio. I have high hopes for The Wolfman.

The Hills Have Eyes and Last House On The Left weren't bad. In my opinion, both are superior to their original versions.
I'll probably take a little bit of shit for that comment.

I don't know Daniel. I think you may be in the majority with those two. Personally, I prefer the originals of both of those.
The Hills remake was ok I guess.With Last House, the more I think about it, the more I dislike it. In a genre where someone is always pushing the limits, they took an already graphic story and toned it down for a more main $tream audience instead of going balls to the wall exploitation

The Last House On The Left remake is a little darker than some people would like to believe and/or admit. Think about the rape/murder scene. It was brutal. The original Last House On The Left is known as an expoitation film of the highest order, but it didn't portray that chain of events as violently as the remake in my opinion. The rest of the remake was pretty mild in comparison to the original, but that one scene made up for it.
Just thinking about that scene makes me angry.

I actually found the rape scene to be kind of tame compared to, say, the gun rape scene in Devils Rejects or even the rape scene in The Accused. I've been watching a lot of exploitation stuff lately and Last House just comes across as main stream fodder to me.
