Captain Kronos was top notch. I also recently watched the Hammer staple Horror of Dracula all the way through. It's an amazing film, still effective today. I think they invented, and still have the best, cross on the forehead gag in this one.

Yes sir, the cross scene in HOD was very well done. As is the demise of Dracula.

The traditional Hammer horror films definitely possess a unique charm that is all their own. It can be off-putting, unless you are into old-fashioned styles of story-telling that were out-dated even within their own time period.
Very few, if any, hold up to modern-day viewing. I don't say that in a disparaging way--most Hammer fans acknowledge this and love them all the more for it.
I would say if you're starting out with Hammer horror, Dracula wouldn't be a bad place to start.

I'm sure it's been discussed before, but why exactly are Hammer films not readily available? Most of the Hammer I've seen was as a kid sitting in front of the TV on Saturday afternoon. This would have been mid to late 70s. Man, I miss old television. Network TV is just goofy now, they have ruined themselves with this cheapo reality crap and they never show this old, classic stuff anymore. Thank goodness for independent channels I guess.

To be honest, I've never really seen a whole lot of Hammer movies on TV growing up. I think we're similar in age, due to your mention of being a kid in the 70s. But then again, I grew up in Canada--when I was a kid, there were, like, two channels. It may have been different for you.

At that time it was three networks plus PBS. All of which came in on a big, goofy looking antenna attached to the side of your house. We got cable TV (including an MTV start-up) in the early 80s. It was like discovering Eden. These days my kid thinks our 70 channels are a bit lame... he's all about online. In another two years I'm sure I'll not here the end of it until we go all digital. LOL.

I just had a Hammer marathon this past week. Saw a whole bunch of them, most of which I got from torrents and some I found in cheap DVD bargain bins. I've seen about 12 Hammer films in total. I think Curse of Frankenstein and Horror of Dracula are still their best, but The Gorgon is also great. Brides of Dracula and Kiss of the Vampire are pretty damn good as well (Kiss has an awesome ending). Captain Kronos is a lot of fun. The other ones I saw are Curse of the Werewolf, The Mummy, Plague of the Zombies, Evil of Frankenstein, Scars of Dracula and Satanic Rites of Dracula, but while I had a lot of fun with them, I didn't think they were as good as the others. None of these were that hard to find, actually.
