Will Smith as Oldboy with Spielberg directing. According to imdb its in pre-production. Now just because its posted there doesn't mean it's gonna happen, but...I don't think it should. There is nothing wrong with the original. In fact I think it's great. So what do the rest of the good folk here think of this?

Absolutely loved the original, but I know some folks have no tolerance for subtitles or even a dubbed flick. Thats the real shame.

I agree - it's too bad. These folks are missing out on a ton of goodness.
As for the remake, I'm usually not a fan of remakes at all and this is no exception. Oldboy is damn fine the way it is.

I liked Oldboy but I can't see Spielberg or Smith caring anything about remaking that particular film. Especially Spielberg, I know he's done a couple of remakes/reimagings but seems like Old Boy is just too fresh and too well done to turn around and redo.

I also agree. I think the average North American movie goer would rather watch paint dry than have to read a movie.

I can. Spielberg, imo, is now all about the almighty $. All he wants to do is try to make blockbusters with the hollywood "A" list. Smith I can see wanting to do it because it's a juicy role and would garner him yet another big paycheck. And for an example of how "fresh" and "well done" doesn't matter, [REC] was remade before it was even released here.

I forgot to mention, I don't think this will happen for at least 3-5 years. I Am Legend was rumored for years before it happened so...

I heard there's some rights issues to work out.
They're saying they're not remaking the Korean movie but retelling the story from the original manga. Smart. That's how you cover your ass from getting the shit kicked outta ya by diehard fans.

Matching up WIll Smith to this project does seem like an impossible stretch. But who the hell knows. I'm just hoping American audiences will continue to grow and give foreign cinema a chance instead of waiting for what is usually the watered down American remake to arrive. That is an irritating trend to say the least.

I really couldn't see this happening, I mean Will Smith and Steven Speilberg? Give me an F'in break. This world isn't big enough for 2 Oldboy's in my opinion.
Thank christ that got cancelled.
