I'm mucho interested, but haven't seen an abundance of them. And their availability is poor as noted. I can remember seeing a bit of the Draculas when I was young, but at some point I'm going to have to track some of the more well know Hammer series down. I love how cheesy and atmospheric Hammer films are, they're just fun.

You know, I used to love watching Hammer films but in the last 15 years or so I just haven't seen that many. I would LOVE to watch a bunch of them again. You know what w need... a horror Tracker. I would be all over that.

Where are you finding horror movies on torrent in general? Or at least those of an older variety. All I've seen is new release on music torrent sites.

There are mininova uploaders that do older horror films sometimes.

Unfortunately your not going to find much Hammer out there in torrent land. There are a couple of Dracula and Frankenstein ones available but that's about it. There is a couple of mega torrents with lots of Hammer films but no one ever seeds.
If you want to search, I highly recommend...The Curse of the Werewolf (1961) Starring Oliver Reed
Dead, come for a visit some time and I'll show you some good (imo) Hammer films. I still have a bunch on vhs.

Yeah Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter is excellent. Probably my favorite Hammer film come to think of it. It used to play on ScreamTV(now called Dusk!?) now and again. Don't know if you get it in Quebec tho Dead. If not, it's one of the one's I have on tape.

Captain Kronos was top notch. I also recently watched the Hammer staple Horror of Dracula all the way through. It's an amazing film, still effective today. I think they invented, and still have the best, cross on the forehead gag in this one.

The traditional Hammer horror films definitely possess a unique charm that is all their own. It can be off-putting, unless you are into old-fashioned styles of story-telling that were out-dated even within their own time period.
Very few, if any, hold up to modern-day viewing. I don't say that in a disparaging way--most Hammer fans acknowledge this and love them all the more for it.
I would say if you're starting out with Hammer horror, Dracula wouldn't be a bad place to start.

I'm sure it's been discussed before, but why exactly are Hammer films not readily available? Most of the Hammer I've seen was as a kid sitting in front of the TV on Saturday afternoon. This would have been mid to late 70s. Man, I miss old television. Network TV is just goofy now, they have ruined themselves with this cheapo reality crap and they never show this old, classic stuff anymore. Thank goodness for independent channels I guess.

To be honest, I've never really seen a whole lot of Hammer movies on TV growing up. I think we're similar in age, due to your mention of being a kid in the 70s. But then again, I grew up in Canada--when I was a kid, there were, like, two channels. It may have been different for you.

At that time it was three networks plus PBS. All of which came in on a big, goofy looking antenna attached to the side of your house. We got cable TV (including an MTV start-up) in the early 80s. It was like discovering Eden. These days my kid thinks our 70 channels are a bit lame... he's all about online. In another two years I'm sure I'll not here the end of it until we go all digital. LOL.

I just had a Hammer marathon this past week. Saw a whole bunch of them, most of which I got from torrents and some I found in cheap DVD bargain bins. I've seen about 12 Hammer films in total. I think Curse of Frankenstein and Horror of Dracula are still their best, but The Gorgon is also great. Brides of Dracula and Kiss of the Vampire are pretty damn good as well (Kiss has an awesome ending). Captain Kronos is a lot of fun. The other ones I saw are Curse of the Werewolf, The Mummy, Plague of the Zombies, Evil of Frankenstein, Scars of Dracula and Satanic Rites of Dracula, but while I had a lot of fun with them, I didn't think they were as good as the others. None of these were that hard to find, actually.

If you wanted to see a Hammer film on TV in Canada during the 70's, you had to stay up pretty late. CTV would play them now and again on Friday or Saturday nights at about 1:AM. Nowadays the only way to see them is on the specialty channels like Drive-inn Classics. We don't get more, because they just aren't commercial enough to play on network TV now.
I miss the old TV too Edgar. But I miss Drive-inn's more. They were a regular summer wknd thing growing up and there was almost always a Hammer film on the bill.

Kind of weird that earlier I was thinking about how TV has changed so much and how I miss it. I'm 36, so I grew up watching old movies on Sunday afternoons (Sherlock Holmes a lot) and thought nothing of it. Today, with cable and such, kids are never even exposed to anything like that. I was able to watch cartoons which were already old when I was young. I lived for the Saturday night monster and sci-fi movies as presented by Son of Svengoolie in Chicago (who is still on the air). That's where my love for gothic horror developed and I became a Hammer and AIP fan.

Since we had a tiny hiatus, I spent my extra free time watching Dracula Has Risen from the Grave and The House that Dripped Blood (Amicus). Risen from the Grave was pretty good albeit a bit slow. Fun ending. The stories in House that Dripped Blood had some neat twists. Time well spent.
