Wow, the Asian Horror forum hasn't had any activity in quite awhile!
Anyhow, I've found myself recently interested in checking out some movies by Takashi Miike lately (the only one of his I've seen is Audition) and after signing up for Netflix not too long ago, I've finally had the chance.
I started with Ichi the Killer and just watched it a couple of nights ago. I personally loved it, it was more or less what I was expecting, but that's a good thing. Tons of violence, gore, dark comedy...good stuff! It's one of those movies where something is just so over the top or fucked up that you can't help but laugh.
And I LOVED Tadanobu Asano as Kakihara. That character was fucking insane and Asano played it perfectly. And it's funny, I've watched a couple of interviews with him on YouTube and he seems like a really normal guy, even saying he found some of the scenes in the movie hard to watch...he sure pulled off the violent psycho part well. I also noticed some similarities between the Kakihara character and Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight (right down to the scars extending from their mouths). I wonder if there was any influence there.

ah...my namesake film.
One of my all time favorites. Apparently Asano is not too fond of violence, real, or on film. So the portrayal of that character was off the hook.
Great, great, great, great film.
I could go on for hours, and hours, probably seen this film over 100 times. I'd also recommend ICHI 1. It's a more made for tv film. And follows ICHI through high school.
Avoid the anime however, complete garbage.

Loved ICHI! I've tried to get some friends to watch it with me but they refuse to watch anything with subtitles. Man, they don't know what they are missing.
I downloaded another ICHI movie a while back, can't remember what it was called, but it was nothing like ICHI in style or substance. It looked very amateurish and I didn't like it at all.
Takashi Miike can sure make some fucked up and great films.

Ha, I never even realized that until just now!

Yeah, I watched some of the commentary (which is Miike and the creator of the original manga, whose name escapes me) and Miike talks about how Asano had turned him down a few times in the past due to not liking violence. When the creator of the manga asked him how he got Asano to do such a violent role, he said something about how the violence was just so over the top and crazy, that Asano didn't have as much of a problem with it. But it really makes his portrayal all the more impressive, given his real-life view on violence.

That's the ICHI I'm talkin' about. It was real low budget, but somewhat charming for this fictional universe.

After ICHI THE KILLER I really got hooked on asano, he really is a great actor. Some of the movies I can't really remember their titles, something with a shark suit? Bright Future, and Last life in the universe were all cool.
Electric Dragon 80,000V, Vital, The newest Zatoichi, and many others were japanese films I delved in to all thanks to that role.
There's an especially funny part in last life in the universe where asano's character runs into an ichi poster with his khakihara character.
Vital was especially good, especially if you're already a tsukamoto fan.
I haven't watched ICHI THE KILLER in quite some time. I sport the faded t-shirt quite frequently, but as for the film. Sadly, I've been burned out on.

Tadanobu Asano kicks ass. Great actor. Ever watched Tokyo Zombie? It's a blast.

bought that one just a month or so ago, totally slipped my mind. When I ran across it, I couldn't pass up asano with an afro, just couldn't do it.
Also a great film, zombies vs. jui-jitsu is awesome.
