The Dark Tower
      #140082 - 11/19/08 09:51 AM

Do we have any Dark Tower fans here ?? I for one love Stephen King's Dark Tower series. The books are fantastic, truly an epic in scifi fantasy.

I heard a rumor that JJ Abrams was talking to King for the rights of the book. I think this could be great ! I have seen some of JJ'S works especially LOST and I think he is the right man for the job. Keep in mind these things are in the early stages but still, I am excited.

Long live Roland Deschain of Gilead !!!!

I have mixed feelings about bringing it to a screen. Can't imagine they could possibly do it justice. On the other hand, I have often thought it they film this in the style of a spaghetti western or maybe even as an animated product it might be a worthwhile effort.

I love The Dark Tower series. Every time I hear the rumour that it is being made into a film I get excited. Of course, they couldn't make the mistake of trying to pack it all into one movie. They would also have to make the right choice for the actor to play Roland.

They would have to and should make a movie for each book, in order offcourse, cause book 4 is a flashback. I believe this to be more complex than the Lord of the Rings, but if that was done brilliantly by Peter Jackson then maybe, just maybe we might have a chance. I have thought Jackson would be a good pick for director, or Guillermo del torro. JJ Abrams, now that I think about it is a 50/50 shot for being able to pull something like this off.

I was also a big fan of THE STAND and I thought the mini-series was good but lacking. They switched some of the story elements around. Mick Garris seems to be Stephen King's favorite director to interpret his work. Mick Garris hasn't done his best work with King material I think. I would hat to have him direct the dark tower series.
I think that King dosent always translate well to film and when he does there are some alterations made to make the sory fit the screen. And when this is done, there's magic !!!

And the only two guys I could picture as Roland are Lance Henriksen and Clint Eastwood and they both have one foot in the grave
any thoughts??

Never thought about Henriksen, but I do think that Eastwood would have been the obvious choice...hell, that picture of Roland in The Dark Tower VII looks just like him. As for now, that's really hard...I almost think it would be best if they cast an unknown in the role (if it were to ever be made), as I can't think of anyone that jumps at me. And I think that Stephen King has been quoted as saying that the reason he's never been keen on the idea of doing a Dark Tower movie is because he doesn't want a particular actor to be associated with Roland whenever you read the books. For instance, if Mel Gibson were to play Roland, he doesn't want thousands (or millions) of future readers to picture Mel Gibson when reading about Roland.

And on the subject of the books, I absolutely LOVE the first four (and the fifth one was pretty good too), but feel that King lost it with the last two. I just felt that there was so much more that could have been done as far as connecting the series to his other works and I never was a fan of King appearing in the stories.

JJ Abrams has the rights and it's gonna happen. It's just a matter of time now. I have mixed feelings about this. I want to see it, but as a fan of the books, I don't want to see it done poorly.

I hope Abrams does a good job. "Star Trek" looks pretty good and "Fringe" is about the best thing on tv so...With a little luck he will do the books some justice.

I pretty much have faith that whenever the movie adaption(s) get made, they'll be good. The comics have been awesome and to me, this is one of those things that if it's in the right hands, they can't mess it up.

I agree with you both. I have high hopes for this. I wonder how they are going to shoot it though. 7 movies?

I wish I had you're faith. It's possible it will be great, along the lines of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but I can't imagine anyone will truly do this series justice (I'm on the fifth book right now). It's a very complicated, mixed genre story. We would be extremely lucky to get as good of a film translation as say the Harry Potter series. They have done reasonably well with that, but even so there is a ton of detail and storyline that has been left out, and that's a pretty straight forward storyline of a pre-teen/tween set of novels.

Then take into account that there's alot of mixed feelings about how the story twists in the last two books. There was practically a country-wide, water cooler, lynch mob formed when the IT miniseries concluded. However it would be kinda cool to see King playing himself.

Also, think about all of the movie adoptions of King's work. Alot more misses than hits IMO. Although I admit their batting average over the last several years is much better than say the first thirty years.

That's a really good question. I can't really see them doing 7 movie's but if they do, they're going to have to shoot everything with Jake first so we won't end up with two different aged Jakes. Kids can grow up real fast.

Thinking trilogy or made for tv mini series. Well maybe not so mini.

And King should play himself. Who else could do it better?

Or we would just have to live with the fact that some of the actors would change between movies.

If you figure an average of three to five episodes per novel, the whole thing could be filmed as a season long serial. That would allow for locking in a cast to complete the entire thing. But I think it'd be reasonable to expect a mini would be a lesser product than a set of feature films.

Doing it over a couple of seasons might work but there is always the ratings problems to think about. If it falters, would it be canceled?
In the past, I think we may have gotten an inferior product from a mini. Now a days things are looking up. JJ Abrams knows how to make good TV.

I read a blip at Quiet Earth that said one John Johnson(Plan 9 remake) is slated to direct "The Dark Tower". I don't know how much truth there is to it though. I have to do more digging.
