I know I can't be alone in my love for the amazingly classic side scrollers.. I want to direct your attention to a free game that will be one of the greatest experiences of your life.
Cave Story
it will work right off the bat with a gamepad if you have one (XBox 360 controller works well).. this game takes all of the best elements from games like Metroid, Castlevania, Zelda II, and mixs them with the humor and charm of games like Earthbound..
it's a small download, it's free, it will run on any computer (they even have versions for Mac and Linux machines as well as Windows).
I can't tell you what a joy this game is to play, this game is coming to Wiiware later this year, but, if you have a computer (and I'm sure you do), hey it's free.. go for it.

Awesome. I love Castlevania and Metroid. I'll give this a look later on tonight...

The game is fun. Download it here http://www.download-free-games.com/freeware_games/cave_story.htm
Thanks for the heads up Misfit.
By the way, can I use a wireless Xbox 360 controller with a plug and play charger for emulated games and such on my PC? I know the wired controllers can be used, but I don't have one...

I'm probably going to give this game a try this weekend when I have some free time. My roommate has been talking constantly about how great it is though so my expectations are getting pretty high.

It's definitely in the same vein as Metroid and Castlevania side scrollers, but it's WAY more cartoony in nature.
I think it's fun...

I just built a new(ish) PC, and I can't get my usb ports to work. I'm afraid I bit off more than I could chew. Everything else is fine, but I CAN'T figure out the usb ports...

that is pretty strange as USB ports typically install themselves when you install XP or Vista. Are you referring to the ones in the back or the front panel USBs?

Wow, do you know what model of motherboard you are running? I would suggest breaking out the cd with it and reinstalling all chipset drivers.
I would also check the bios to check to make sure it is not disabled there for some odd reason.

If only it were that easy. I built this PC from scrap that was lying around in the Daily Newspaper building. I don't have driver cds, or any other software cds for that matter.
I've got the damn thing running perfectly, but I cannot get the friggin USB ports to work.
It's not a bad setup for free though.
Pentium4 3.0 ghz 1 gig ddr ram dvd rom dvd+-rw 160 gb HD 15" HP LCD flat screen NON WORKING USB PORTS
If I could get the usb ports working I'd be making out like a champ on this deal. I've got ZERO dollars invested so far...
It's amazing what some people will discard at the first sign of trouble. It took me around an hour of acutal work to get this machine running. Plus it's 4 times faster than my old PC. I can encode a dvd in less than 10 minutes on this thing...
