STACY (2001)

This instalment is of one of the best modern Asian zombie films, STACY. It was a little underrated or more accurately just little known even during the Asian horror boom of the early 2000's. Although it did manage to get a North American DVD release, but more on that later.

Japan is in the grip of a crisis. Young girl (15-17) undergo a strange transformation. It begins with a state known as Near Death Happiness (NDH) but then a short time later they drop dead and soon go into a less then happy state as seen above.

The government has no idea what is going on so to combat it they form a organization known as the Romero Repeat Kill Corps to deal with the situation. By the way, the dialog from their recruitment commercial forms my signature.

They do their vaguely competent best but things are still out of control. As per law, only the loved ones of the girl or the squad are allowed to handle a repeat kill.

They do have help taking out the STACY’s as they are now known, from a variety of useful weapons such as a arm mounted chainsaw called the Bruce Campbell’s Right Hand 2 as seen on TV.

Later a puppet show examines the philosophical dimensions of this societal problem.

Together the military and scientists begin to examen the STACY’s to try and uncover their secrets. A mysterious substance called Butterfly Twinkle Powder is discovered to have some profound connection to the transformation. But then things start to go wrong.

Then things start to go even more wrong.

Now things are still going wrong, but a militant young girl singing group arrives. Will the true secret of the STACY’s ever be know?

STACY is a first class mix of comic and serious material and does homage to horror and zombie films of the past. The budget is moderate, but its still looks really good.

The good news is that there is a region 1 DVD put out by SYNAPSE which goes for around $15 US and it is worth picking up. You can find it at most online DVD shops as well as many retail stores.
