Nicely done demon movie from the late 80's. One of the best uses of claymation in horror I can remember right off, very inventive creatures. They've been showing this on Showtime so I have finally gotten a chance to see some of it. The movie feels quite disjointed in alot of places, however I keep missing the first half so I can't really complain about that too much yet. Who else remembers this one?

I remember watching The Gate when I was younger. I have memories of liking it back then, however I have not seen it in many years. The Gate 2 was definitely not as good as the first one(my memory of the first one anyway).

Good movie that is a bit intense for the young audience it was aiming for, if I remember correctly...

I got to catch it on Showtime a couple of days ago. It was the first time I'd watched it in a lot of years, and I still thought it was pretty damn entertaining. Sure, it's a bit cheesy, but it's fun, and it's probably the best horror movie that I can think of that was originally marketed towards younger kids...

Yeah, I would say it was definitely geared towards kids. Kind of a step between The Goonies and Pitch Black or something. I'm having trouble seeing the resemblance, but apparently the lead kid is Stephen Dorff, who played Deacon Frost in the first Blade movie.
** SPOILER **
When the gardener gets knocked out, then falls face first to the floor and busts into about 30 of those claymation guys, that was really a cool freaking idea. I wonder who originally thought that up? It's kinda one of those chicken and egg things: did someone write the story and they decided claymation was the proper efx, or did someone think up the cool claymation possibilities ahead of time and then wrote the story around those ideas. I suspect it was the latter.

Yeah, it's definitely Stephen Dorff. I've known about that for quite a long time actually. The first time I watched Blade I made a comment about Frost being the little boy from The Gate, and my sister thought I was full of shit. I went to this really old store and rented The Gate just to show her that Stephen Dorff did in fact play the lead kid in the movie...

That one is a major childhood favorite of mine. The atmosphear and special effects were just pure awesome. Last time I re-watched it was well over five years ago, so I guess a little re-visiting is in order...
I didn't know it was targetted at kids. Well, kiddy movie or not, it's creepier and spookier than most not-for-children horror movies, imho. I know it sure freaked me out the first time I saw it It's a shame that, nowadays, children's movies have become so tame, bland and non-threatening...
I remember part 2 being a total disapointment.

There are simply too many people who either can't or won't distinguish the difference between movies/video games and reality these days. Bland childrens movies and games are extremely commonplace, and I put the blame fully on the shoulders of the lazy parents who'd rather condemn something as trash rather than explain it to their children. Producers, directors and programmers have been bashed for releasing sleaze for years, and it seems that they've come to terms with it. Most video game developers and film studios don't try to push the envelope of things that are developed for children anymore because every time they do it's nothing but trouble. It really is a shame, because kids are missing out on a lot of great things simply because they have lazy parents who aren't worthy of raising children...
And The Gate 2 was pretty bad...

I thought it was entertaining, albeit a wisp of a movie. It does a great job in generating tension as the story progresses and its special fx-laden climax is pretty good for something that's claerly on a limited budget. Not a classic, but underrated nonetheless.

Ahh, yes. The Gate is a Canadian gem. I don't like it as much as a lot of people, but I still have a special appreciation for it. I hear it looks great when aired on TV in HD. I suppose the reason why I don't have a special spot in my heart for the "kiddie" horror flicks is because since I was a wee lad I was watching flicks that were rated R!
