A very helpful friend of mine has his birthday coming up. I've heard him mention a couple times that he'd like to own the Watchmen comic series (that's the one being made as a movie by the Dawn remake guy, right?), so I've decided to get him that. I'm willing to spend more than for usual friend gifts, since he's helped me out with various tedious things (such as moving  ) and I feel I owe him that.
Thing is, I know nothing about comics. I'm not familiar with the whole terminology. I've been looking at sites like amazon.com, and from the descriptions (filled with terms such as "trade paperback" which mean as much to me as if they were written in ancient Greek) I can't make out whether the editions they're selling contain the full series.
So my question is this : could any of you fine folks point out to me which edition of Watchmen I could buy (preferably from some big reputable site such as amazon) so that my friend has the whole series? I know there's some thing called the Ultimate Edition or something, which costs a few hundred bucks, but hopefully I can buy another edition for a less insane price (I owe him, but not THAT much!).

Trade paperback is the way to go. Big graphic novel that combines the series into one convenient cover to cover read.

I agree and disagree.
If your friend only wants to read The Watchmen then the Trade Paperback is the way to go. If he's a collector the individual comics are a much better gift. TPB's are rarely collectibe, but the individual issues are liking to see a price spike once anticipation of the movie arrives...
The last time I saw a complete run of The Watchmen on ebay it was around 50 bucks.

Wow, evidently the anticipation level of the movie is already on the rise. The only complete run of The Watchmen that's listed on ebay is already at $150.00 with over 4 days remaining.

I think the TPB is the way to go after all.
As a matter of fact you could get him The Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns and The Killing Joke TPB's from amazon.com for around $30.00. These are among the greatest comics of all time...

I'll keep my eyes open for a set of The Watchmen for you, but after seeing that ebay auction I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Ashamed to say, I have not read The Watchmen yet 
I've purchased at least 7 or 8 trade paperbacks from Amazon (or gotten them as gifts) and all have arrived in really good condition. They do sometimes put a UPC sticker over the original UPC printed on the cover. This would probably only bother a serious collector. Considering you will not be buying a 1st print it's not a big deal. I would be a little more suspect of auction sites like eBay. Comic book sellers will sometimes lie about the condition of the books they sell. And you are unlikely to get much of price break going the auction route (there's a good chance you'd pay more on eBay). If you're really anal, you can probably pick this up at your local Barnes & Noble (or have them order it for you) which would allow you check the condition before you buy.

If the Trade Paperback has the whole story in it, then I'm going with that one. It's a lot cheaper than I expected, tho. Guess I'm gonna buy my pal a couple bottles of booze with the leftover cash
