The Great Horror Family Episode 8: True Story! Afterlife of Honor (2004)

Here is something of a detour from the typical things covered in this series. Here we have an episode from the Japanese TV series The Great Horror Family. For those not familiar, its similar to the American TV series Eerie Indiana. In that series, the town of Eerie is the weirdness center for the world, in other words all the words strange things are drawn there and it centers around a couple of kids who are the only ones who know it. GHF is like that only with supernatural forces which all center around a families new home. The son is the only one able to perceive this and his life becomes filled with ghosts, demons, aliens, time travel, cursed objects, men in black and a lot of other strange things. At one point things became too much for him and he leaves home and had a zombie filled odyssey, this is that story. By the way, this series is easily available in the US, more info at the end of the review.

After being knocked out, out hero is picked up by a gang who traffics in the dead and taken to a, err, living dead bar?

The bar girls are a little dead, that is they are the reanimated corpses of people who have died and were unalarmed by loved ones.

Things seem to be going well with the bar, until one night when the character of Sidetrack Joe comes in and starts trouble.

For a while, the series hero seems happy at the bar. Bringing the ladies dry ice and training a second undead bartender, but can it last?

The forces of the beyond that have a prejudice against the reanimated dead send a zombie assassin to destroy them.

Things go from bad to worse as one zombie becomes many, want to know what happens? Watch and find out.

This episode has many strong references to 1970's Yakuzza films and the entire series is full of such film and other pop culture references. The series is very short, only thirteen episodes, each of which is around twenty-two minutes. I’ve seen the entire series twice over, once in a single viewing and each time it was a lot of fun. Its filled with tongue in cheek humor and black comedy and has a very light air about it. The series is out on a three disc, region one DVD that usually goes for around $25 US. It has some nice special features, including a lot of little mini making of videos.
