Asian Zombie film Review Series 5: He Never Dies
      #138289 - 08/01/08 07:06 AM

The fifth instalment in this series goes a little off the beaten path to a minor Japanese oddity. He Never Dies is one of the six instalments in the Guinea Pig film series. The first in the series began as a fake snuff film, shot in a partially realistic way, although you could easily tell that it was fiction. The next instalment followed in tone, but if never made any attempts to appear as anything other then fiction. Later on they began to steer the series into comedy after taking heat for the subject matter, there is even the famous side story that Charlie Sheen viewed one of the films and reported it to the FBI because her though it was legit. This instalment is the beginning of that move toward comedy.

The film tells the story of a looser who has a brain dead job at a computer company. Everyone seems to be against him and he begins to think of suicide.

Now an expert comes on to explain that the mysterious events in this film are truly mysterious and that to find out more we should keep watching.

With nothing to live for the man slices his writs, but is more then a little upset when he discovers he is not only still alive, but he feels no pain as well.

A few more hours alone in his apartment and he is randomly slicing and dicing.

Things are about to come to a head when he invites his coworker over.

It seems that his social life as one of the living dead is much improved compared to his past state.

He Never Dies is a nice first attempt at comedy for the series and at around 45 minutes, the typical length for the series, it doesn’t overstay its welcome. This is a zombie film in the loosest sense, but I feel it still qualifies.

The six episodes and two making of documentaries for the series have been released as double features by Unearthed Films. They are officially out of print, but you can still find them on some sites and ebay. There are also a few import DVD’s including a very nice, but hard to find extremely limited edition German box set. High points of the series are the second instalment Flowers of Flesh and Blood as well as the last one Mermaid in a Manhole, which features a study of the life cycle of a diseased, rotting mermaid being held prisoner in a bathtub.

Next Tuesday will feature a much more conventional as well as easy to find zombie film.

I saw it several years ago, back when the Guinae Pig series was still a very underground, mysterious and hard-to-find deal...

My bootleg had no subtitles, which made the viewing experience even weirder. The Guinae Pig series sure took some pretty crazy directions when it decided to break away from the "simulated snuff" formula

For some reason, I found He Never Dies more disturbing than Flowers of Felsh and Blood... Sounds inconceivable, I know, what with it being so damn goofy and unrealistic. I guess its because I find self-mutilation more disquieting than plain old mutilation Also, the whole tone and ambiance of the film had something a little freaky about it.

About that old story of how Charlie Sheen thought Flowers of Flesh and Blood was a real snuff : when I heard that Sheen was buying into the tinfoil-hat conspiracy nonsense of the 9/11 "truth" movement, my first thought was "Man, he really IS that dumb! Now I'm sure that Guinae Pig story is true!!"
