JUNK (1999)
Instalment four of this series brings us to Japan for a film that gained a great deal of notoriety in North America following the wake of the Asian horror boom. A lot of this was frankly the image from the poster and DVD cases of a attractive female zombie with a bit of flesh between her lips along with the films tagline Everybody Fights.

The setting is an abandoned warehouse in a industrial park on the outskirts of a Japanese city. Although its more accurately nearly abandoned as the US and Japanese governments have set up a secret lab there delving into methods of reanimating the dead. You can see where this might be the source of some problems.

As the picture shows they succeeded in reanimating the dead, but not in a good way. Now enter a gang of robbers who are so cool that they feel compelled to dress in trench coats and walk in slow motion. Sadly the entire gang is made up of idiots who botch the job. But happily for them they find a nice abandoned warehouse to hide in while the heat is on.

Later another gang arrives to collect the stolen goods, but even the astounding hair of their leader isn’t enough to prevent the zombies from attacking.

Luckily for the gangs there are very few zombies and they have enough guns to easily deal with them, then the movie ends. Or would have ended at that point if a big bottle of zombie serum wasn’t accidentally spilled on the pile of dozens of dead bodies stored in the warehouse basement.

The government does the responsible thing in this situation and activates the self destruct device remotely. It seems that they are having some technical problems in this area while at the same time the gangs are winning with fight, in the context that nearly all of the gang members are zombies and they are doing much better then they ever were when they were alive.

Now the government finally sends two people in to take care of the situation, how they expect them to realistically do this is one of the films mysteries.
JUNK is actually a fun film. It tries to be a little more serious then it can in the end support. Its almost like a watered down version of Versus in its basic concept. But still, it’s a nice little zombie film and a hell of a good time.
JUNK has gotten a now mostly OOP release from Unearthed Film in the US, as well as a German Region 0 PAL DVD. You can still find it on ebay and at a few sites, although in those cases its sometimes on backorder. But its worth the energy to find.

I've wanted to see this movie for quite some time, but have never been able to. I'll see if I can queue it up on Netflix...

I immediately went to Netflix to queue it up, but they don't have it. Oh well, I'll come across it eventually...

I like that you mentionned the yakuza guy's absurd hairdo Seriously, that weird silvery mane was so distracting that I couldn't pay attention to anything else whenever it was on screen!!
I liked Junk quite a bit. I picked up the Unearthed DVD when it came out, and I'm glad I did.
The movie kinda felt like a Japanese homage to Italian zombie flicks (as I understand, the 70's and 80's spaghetti gorefests are quite popular in the land of the rising sun). Indeed, if you replace the yakuza with mafiosi and remove the zombie boss who can turn super-sayan, it would fit right at home alongside Zombi 3 and the likes (well, not quite as cheesy as Zombi 3 but you get the idea).
Overall a fun, fast-paced and rather entertaining little zombie flick, that doesn't add much to the genre but makes for a more-than-decent time-killer.
And that Japanese guy who tries to speak English... man, that sure was something!

That pretty much sums up my feelings as well, Junk is one of my favorites though, it's just one of those zombie movies that does not start to drag at any point like most do IMO.
for those who can't find it I've had it for at least 2-3 years now, so I'll have to look back to where I got mine, it may have been an online import store, but it is region 1.
