All in all I liked this film quite a bit. My wife pointed out the painfully obvious that Mark Wahlberg is just not that serious an actor and may have been the wrong choice here (I like Wahlberg, but some parts just aren't for some people). The suicide sequences were masterfully done. The bodies falling from the roof was absolutely stunning. I loved the score as well. This film definitely had it's share of comic relief (ala Signs) but the comic relief was very tasteful and I enjoyed the bits. I'm really glad Shyamalan went back to the basics here and presented a very tense film. I was not a fan of Lady in the Water so when I saw he was directing his first R film, I was pretty pleased.
Now, I admit, this film has it flaws but the overall feel of the film was really enjoyable. Anyone else get a chance to catch this yet?

I'm a bit relieved to hear a good review. I have really enjoyed M. Night's work thru THE VILLAGE, haven't seen LADY IN THE WATER yet. There was alot of speculation that since the media didn't get an advanced viewing of THE HAPPENING that it was a stinker. Have been crossing my fingers that that wasn't the case at all. Hopefully I will get a chance to see this at the theater. The trailer is quite intriguing.

Most of his other terrible movies are well received too, but I'm not a fan of M. Night Shama-lama-ding-dong. I'll wait until it's on HBO...

I was forced to watch it earlier this evening, and it has two things going for it.
1. It's slightly better than Lady In The Water, but that really isn't much of a compliment. 2. It doesn't last very long, so your suffering is kept to a minimum.
I knew this movie was going to be terrible, and with god as my witness I'll not watch another of this guy's films. We all know about the petition to stop Uwe Bolle, but where's the petition to stop M. Night? I'd gladly sign it...

The difference is that MNS writes his own stuff and has unique stories for the most part.. Boll destroys stories that are dear to gamers hearts.

I think they are still worlds apart, have not watched the happening yet, just looks lame to me, I did really dislike Lady in the Water, but MNS knows how to make a good movie, he is a fantastic director, just not always the best writer. Sixth Sense was fantastic, Signs was entertaining, The Village was ok, Unbreakable was not that bad IMO, the only movie so far I truely disliked was Lady in the water, it was abysmal..

To each his own. Personally I think he tries to make strange films just for the sake of making strange films, but at this point they're more stupid than strange. Here's how I'd rank his films from worst to best, and reasons as to why I think they're all bad.
6. Lady In The Water. It's REALLY stupid, and it's boring as hell. 5. The Village. The film's "twist" ending is lame/thoughtless, and it's boring as hell. 4. Signs. Aliens have technology to travel through endless space, but can't bust down a wooden door. Boring as hell. 3. The Happening. Bad direction. Bad acting. Bad script. John Leguizamo. Boring as hell. 2. The Sixth Sense. A totally predictable "twist" of a climax that's utterly boring as hell. 1. Unbreakable. It's by far MNS's best film to date, but it's still boring as hell.
You may notice the one re-occurance in my sentiments of each of his films. I would really like to see him live up to his undeserved reputation, but at this point I think he's hopeless...

I did watch the Happening today and I do have to say it was pretty lame all around.. but the reason you can't compare him to Boll is, at his worst his films are mediocre, they are not really terrible IMO.
I was entertained enough by most of them, I never even tried to guess endings or anything, just went with it.. the happening IMO has no twist, just a lame plot.

I get the feeling that we're discussing a lesser of two evils type of thing, and that's not the "argument" that I'm trying to make.
All I'm saying is that Uwe Boll and M. Night both suck. We can continue to go back and forth with discussion of who sucks the most, but at the end of the day they're both awful.
I will agree with you about M. Night being the more talented of the two, but IMO that's like arguing over what kind of shit smells worse. All shit stinks, and Uwe Boll & M. Night both make bad movies...

What I'm about to write is 100% spoiler, so if you for some reason care about that, don't read this.
I've been thinking about this more and more, I actually had a friend tell me this movie was great and tried to defend the plot.
The biggest issue I take with this movie is just how retarded the plot is. You know I can buy the idea of plants producing toxins that will kill us humans, that is a completely reasonable plot.. but for that to be accepted or believed it would be more along the lines of itching, outbreaks or just a poisoned death... what this movie does is makes the claim that plants just magically become smarter than any of us, fully understand the inner workings of the human brain to make us kill ourselves.. that is just insane..... not only that but these plants have gained the ability to control the wind to deliver this to specific targets (and amazingly airborn toxins will effect a group of people, and another group 5 feet away will be uneffected even though they are breathing the same air just feet away).
the more I think about this the more it just pisses me off how poorly thought out it all was.

The Happening is quite the typical M. Night offering if you ask me.
All of his movies are B A D, and some of them are far worse than this one...
