THE MIST!!!
      #135485 - 12/05/07 05:15 PM

I'm going to start by saying I like a good majority of Stephen King movies, THE DEAD ZONE, THE SHINING, 1408, THE STAND, and CARRIE first come to mind. However, I do not love them. They never really feel fleshed out, and the endings are usually mediocre. Well, that trend has broken, and THE MIST is the first Stephen King adaptation that I have to say I down right LOVE. I mean: WOW, AMAZING, HARD-ON inducing LOVE.

God bless you Frank Darabont. Using your Academy Award Nominated A-list talent for the greater good of horror. I've always known he was a fan of the genre, and it's about time he stepped up to the plate. The result is not only my favorite film of the year, but also one of the best horror films ever made. THE MIST can easily be placed alongside a mighty like THE THING (which is actually blatantly referenced within the first 5 minutes of the movie ) And like THE THING, it contains the one thing I felt 30 DAYS OF NIGHT could've used to make that movie great, the element of human nature.

It also has quite a few wonderful gooey gory moments, it's at times funny, and the ending is the equivalent of a brass knuckle sucker punch to the stomach. I really feel the need to rush out to the theatre and see this again as soon as possible. I can't stop smiling .

Also note, fans of H.P. Lovecraft will be glad to finally see Lovecraftian type beasties treated with the amount of respect they deserve. I know tentacled beings and flying insects don't SOUND all that terrifying, but wait till you see what happens when they get somebody in their grasp, I guarantee you'll think differently.

Overall, everybody, do yourself a favor and go check out this movie. I'm shocked more people haven't seen this already, or even commented on it if they have.

***** May contain something that could be interpreted as a sort of spoiler, maybe *****

I liked it a whole lot more than I thought I would. It remained a lot more faithful to the ''short novel'' than I thought it would, and it managed to capture the feel of it pretty damn well too. There was great atmosphere throughout, and some awesome suspense moments. Plus, I loved the ending : it's nice to see a movie with so much balls!
A very pleasant surprise overall.

I thought the movie was really good, capturing a lot of what made the short story great. I thought that some of the CGI was pretty poorly executed and it didn't look good at all. But the tentacles looked killer and the monsters in the Mist were fantastic (one reminded me of the monster on the cover of The Misfits' Walk Among Us/ Angry Red Planet Monster).

but for the ending...

************************HUGE SPOILERS**************************

I really hated it. It seemed like such a cheap shot to me (and not in a cool Twilight Zone sort of way). Really, they thought about suicide for all of about 30 seconds before he shot them all. They were like, Oh well, I guess that's it. let's kill ourselves. No fucking way...
The tanks rolling in was ridiculous as it made the whole Mist less ominous and powerful and more of a military fuck up that they could rally against. I thought it was supposed to be an end of the world scenario and it's like.. "whoops" should have waited a little longer for the Military to come rolling through. It brought the film from a B+ down to a C IMHO. Oh well...

*************************************************************************************

END SPOILERS

Anyway, with the above mentioned, I'll give it a C. Too bad...

**************************************SPOILER*********************************************

I see you're point, but it wasn't like the decision to kill themselves came completely out of the blue. You saw hope leaving their faces as the ending progressed. The empty school bus, the turned over cars, the giant creature in the road, I'm sure they were thinking the mist spread over the entire world. What chance could they stand? The car running out of gas was the final nail in the coffin. By that moment, they had already accepted their fate. As for him shooting his son, think back to the promise he made to him in the grocery store. He promised he'd never let one of the monsters get him. I'm sure that's one of the first things that came to his mind when he heard the creatures in the distance after the car died. Why did it happen so fast? I guess the easiest analogy would be like pulling off a band-aid. You know it's going to hurt a lot, but you know it needs to be done. Don't think about it, don't build up to it, just do it.

And the military coming in last minute, I thought it was brilliant. Does it make the mist seem like a military fuck up? Yes, but that's what it was in the first place. And I'd hate to side with the religious nut in the film, but the in the end the main problem the main characters had was they had little to no faith. It was their tragic flaw, which until the end appeared to be their greatest strength. Had they waited just a little bit longer, they would have been saved. It's sad, it's unfair, it's horror. That's why I loved it!

I liked the film and I liked the ending

HOWEVER

SPOILERS

I would have Loved this movie had he after killing all the people in the car, he gets out gets killed by a monster and thn give a view of the world that has been taken over by the mist. The ending they used was a great punch in the gut. And as Doc said it showed balls. But the only point to it was to punch you in the gut. I would have prefered a movie about the end of the world as opposed to a film about the end of a man's whole life.

End Spoilers

I also did not like everyone jumping on the crazy religion band wagon so quickly. I am a tad tired of MONSTERS are Bad but People are worse thing.

But overall everthing was done well. Scatch that. There was some really poor CGI in this film.

This is good news. My initial feeling toward this movie "based solely on theatrical trailers mind you" was that it would suck pretty bad. I like a lot of the Stephen King film adaptations as well so I guess I should go check it out...

I thought the movie was pretty good, up until the end. I can't believe that so many of you loved the ending. To me it was like the worst ending ever.

..............Spoilers..................................

I have never been a big fan of shitty endings. It took me a while to get over the ending of the original "Night of the Living Dead." In time I realized that there was a message behind the ending of Night of the Living Dead. There were times where shitty endings were necessary. In this case I saw no reason for the way it ended, except for to make it depressing. A guy killing his only son and his friends,is beyond depressing. I don't watch horror movies to be depressed. I watch them to be entertained. The ending discourage me from ever watching this movie again.

Man,I dug this movie, but shit did it depress me.. I feel like listening to some My Chemical Romance or some shit right now... gonna pierce my lip and slash my wrists.. damn...

I think this ending has to go down in the record book of most fucked up ending ever...not bad, just, fucked up..

I watched it today and overall I was impressed. I thought it was a good movie all around. The creatures looked absolutely nuts even though the cgi wasn't the best I've seen. They should have dealt with the preaching lady a little differently from the word go. She actually started to piss me off after a while...

I think that was the point

Oh, and for those of you that are interested, Frank Darabont announced he will be releasing a black and white version of THE MIST on DVD, so the movie could have more of the 60's monster movie vibe he was going for. Me thinks this is fucking awesome. Me can't wait.

You'd have to be mentally challenged to not notice her as an asshole immediately. In reality most people wouldn't listen to her constant religious babbling. She would've been made to shut the hell up pretty quickly. I thought her character was annoying and that she wasn't necessary. Some of the other characters were annoying too but you can't have it all I guess. I do agree with you about the b&w dvd. The movie will look much better that way, the bad cgi won't be so obvious in black and white. I don't think the ending of the movie is all that special either "not the vehicle scene", but the one following it. A Darth Vader NOOOOO!!!! scream would've fit in perfect. How could you drive along and not notice tanks and huge convoy trucks that are covered with lights a minute behind you? I know the visibility was low but did the mist make their ears stop working? Don't get me wrong, I thought the movie was good but it's not a classic by any means...
