Cannibal Holocaust
      #132341 - 11/22/06 08:02 AM

Cannibal Holocaust

Directed by Ruggero Deodato

Starring: Robert Kerman and Gabriel Yorke.

The media, it is an uncompromising beast, fuelling our minds, nine times out of ten with heartless violence and/or obscene sex. A character in this film sums the media up best, she says: “The public wants sensationalism. The more you rape their senses, the happier they are.” It is unfortunate that this is very, very true. The film in question, Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust, Is a stark, and painfully realistic account of anthropologist Professor Harold Munroe’s expedition into Amazonia, nick-named “The Green Inferno”, to find a group of 4 documentary filmmakers who went missing in the jungle trying to document primitive life. While it becomes clear on his journey that the 4 brave documentarians did indeed die, he was able to obtain their film. Back in New York, the Pan-American Broadcasting Company is planning to display the exploits of their 4 brave American filmmakers on a television program, and have Professor Munroe as their host. Before accepting, Professor Munroe asks to preview the footage before it airs, so as to get a better understanding of their terrifying account. He views the footage, and discovers that they are not as brave or heroic as he was lead to believe. He witnesses rape, torture and murder, at the hands of the very people filming this footage. They are complete savages, and by the film’s conclusion, we learn the true meaning of “What goes around, comes around.” Cannibal Holocaust is one of those movies that automatically gains a lot of hype. But what sets it apart from most movies like that, it is absolutely deserving of said hype. It is graphic, disturbing, brutal, and by far the most morally reprehensible film ever made. Through the course of the film, it doesn’t really choose sides, as both ends display their own ruthlessness. But on another note, the ones who are viewed as the most ruthless are undoubtedly the white film crew, who unlike the cannibals, are committing their atrocities to further their ratings. The cannibals commit them as a part of their religion. The bottom line: We don’t have to go to the other side of the world to find monsters, they live within us. Whether it’s the evil Americans burning natives alive for a good shot that in turn will get them ratings, or the corporate beast who is demanding those ratings in the first place. We all have evil within us, it’s just that some people let the evil consume them, and they lose their souls. The increasingly realistic human gore and the absolutely real animal violence makes Cannibal Holocaust as loved as it is hated. It has been banned in over 50 countries, and rests heavily censored in others. Very few countries offer the film in its uncut format legally, making this film big in the bootleg DVD world. In summary, depending on your mindset, Cannibal Holocaust can be very different for very different people. Up-Tight cinema snobs will more than likely call it “Violence for violence’s sake.” while some film purists will see the great potential in the film, and look past the brutality and into the moral of the story. And after all of that, die-hard gorehounds will take great pride in the film’s special effects. While some films may gain notoriety, then become soon forgotten, Cannibal Holocaust is not going anywhere any time soon, and all who see it shall never forget it. Ever.

So this is the film that they did not want you to see, after seeing it, I can see why. Here is a film that has hundreds of people who love it, and just as many who hate it. Mostly because of the violent content within the film, it's too raw and horrific for some, but for others, they love every minute of it. Myself, I'm in that one percent who's indifferent.

This is a grind house picture, where it's basically two stories into one movie, the first half of the movie is the search party who goes into the jungle looking for the film crew. The second half of the movie is the actual film footage from the documentary crew, which portion of the film I liked more is hard to decide, because what we see in the first half is shocking to us, we have not seen this before, it's new and it's brutal, but happens in the second half of the movie is more brutal, but not as shocking, because you are expecting the uncomfortably of the film to grow, and it does.

This movie influenced the likes of films like The Blair Witch Project. Here is a movie that goes down in history as one of the most shocking movies of all time, does it deserve that title? Well, let's see, during the 90 some odd minutes of the film, be ready for: 3 different rape scenes, full-frontal nudity (both male and female), decapitations, real-life animal killings, guts ripping, people burning, torture, the most disturbing abortion scenes ever, limbs being chopped off, people getting impaled, bodies being hacked to bits and guts being ripped out and what makes it worse is that it's not that kind of "Dead-Alive" tongue in cheek gore, it's so realistic and disturbing.

The music is beautiful, the theme song that plays throughout it amazing and a high point in this film. Don't pick it up for acting, or dialouge...but then again I wouldn't imagine someone doing that. This is a horror movie for those disturbed horror fans, those who want to see this movie to see what all the talk is about, brace yourself, you're in for some pretty horrific stuff. I'm not going to go into the whole political aspect of animal killings, but those were some of the hardest scenes to watch in this film.

People are put off by the violence, so they fail to see what it's about. How we today are more curious about what's bad in the world, then what is good, how the journalist focus more on violent issues. Was it overdone? But then again, maybe it was just the right amount. It also shows how we as a culture are insensitive and ignorant to others, even if it is a cannibal tribe.

I did dig this film, for it's unique style, that did come out before BWP faze. I love all kinds of horror movies, and this is one not to miss, of course if you can handle this type of stuff. The DVD is limited to about 10,000 copies, so if you want a copy pick it up fast. Oh and did I forget to mention that during it's release it was banned in almost 60 countries.

6/10

Great job, Kam.

I've never found the film that disturbing to be honest. Not sure why. But I have always loved it and thought it's perhaps the best example of the sub-genre. It is indeed an experience not soon forgotten.

Again, good job.

I've heard of this film, mostly through this site, but I've never seen it. Does this make me a bad person?

Not at all my man, just find yourself a copy and let the brutality consume you, it's a hell of a flick, and not one to be taken lightly. If you have a strong stomach (and this varies from person to person) and have an interest in the film, I would greatly reccomend seeking it out.

Cannibal Holocaust is one of my favorite movies of all time. I think it was WAY before it's time. In fact I think that if it were made today it would STILL be ahead of it's time. It's a shame that this movie isn't available to a wider audience. I heard some rumors several years back that it was on the re-make list, but we all know that if this movie is remade it wouldn't be the same. There's no way anyone could get away with making a film of this type in this day and age. Anchor Bay should buy the distribution rights to Cannibal Holocaust and release a really high quality remaster so that everyone could get the chance to see it. I think of this movie as a rite of passage to horror fans.

I recently saw this film for the first time. I have to say it gave me that very uncomfortable feeling, its not the kind of film you should watch with lots of people around you, cause the silence and the discomfort becomes unberable, especially during the 3rd act. But I have to say I loved it, for its rawness, and its unapologetic way of looking at the media. Your right it was ahead of its time, and can never be re made. These days it would be forced to be too comercial and too trendy, and lose the feel of it.

I gotta say if you have not seen this movie and want to, you can watch the full movie on google video, just type in Cannibal Holocaust in the advanced search with the duration set to long.

Speaking of cannibals on google video you can also watch the hilarious Cannibal! The Musical on google video. Its directed by Trey Parker and Matt Stone (Creators of South Park) Although I must say the latter film is much more light hearted than the other.
