Is anyone else a little puzzled by the fact that, in popular culture, zombies are almost always described as ''craving brains''? Where the hell did that come from? The only zombie stories I can think of where zombies actually eat brains are Return of the Living Dead 1 to 3... oh, and the zombie story in that old Simpsons Halloween special (and even then, they ate other body parts as well). In everything else, they just eat whatever human body parts they can sink their teeths into. So why is the notion that ''zombies eat brains'' so damn prevalent?
It's a little stupid when reviewers talk of ''brain eating zombies'' when describing a movie where they don't have any particular preference for brain tissue, especially when it's a movie where zombies can be killed by destroying the brain (if they ate the brains of their victims, said victims would stay dead instead of joining the zombie horde).
Sorry for the slightly weird and pointless topic, but I'm just curious to hear what you guys think

I think the notion is evidence that Return of the Living Dead had a HUGE impact on the fans and the whole Zombie genre.

I think it is probably because the whole "Brains, brains...." line from ROTLD became stuck in people's brains. The only way to get it out is a shot to the head.

So you guys think this can all be traced back to Return of the Living Dead?
That'd be pretty cool. I didn't know this movie (which I love dearly) had been famous enough to influence pop culture on such a level.
But now that I think of it, it must have had a pretty good built-in fanbase, what with the DVD flying off the shelves like it did when it was released a few years ago...
But all this talk of ''brain-eating zombies'' still gets on my nerves, even if it was caused by a great flick

could be the fact that the zombies are slow and dumb so they need brains to be smarter, eat your heart out Day of the Dead, that is your brain.
