Ready for one of the best and creepiest Asien horror movies ever? 'Cause here is SHUTTER!
Holy shit! SHUTTER is a fucking masterpiece! What the hell happened to Thai horror? They always made promising movies that are pretty flawed, and in the next moment - with flicks like SARS WAR and SHUTTER - everything is perfectly right! Awesome!!!
I think SHUTTER is not only one of the creepiest Asian horror movies ever... it's also one of the very best. I love this flick. There are so many scary sequences, as well as great shock moments, but what's more important... the cast is great, giving life to the characters and make them so believable and sympathetic you care for them... plus the story is excellent and intelligent. I think the ending is one of the best ones ever. Although there are one or two hints of what's coming the ending hit me by surprise. SHUTTER is a must-see-movie in my opinion. Absolutely fantastic stuff! It might not win a prize for originality, but the scare scenes are handled so damn wonderful which I've rarely seen since RING or DARK WATER (not the US remakes but the real stuff).
If you're curios by now don't hesitate and buy the Hong Kong DVD which has got English subtitles. You won't regret it.

This movie just came out in theathers here in Mexico.
I liked it a lot, it was a lot better (and scarier) than I expected. I agree that it isn't exactly original (a lot of plot twists will seem familiar to longtime fans of asian horror), but even so many scenes were played expertly. In particular a certain "girl in the bed" scene and the last twist (which is chilling when you think of what it implies) were very well done, IMHO. There were even a couple comic relief moments that would have been groan-inducing if handled by lesser talented people, but which the directors here managed to do just right --they were actually funny, especially the scene with a drag queen.
In sort: recommended.

Yes, I agree. This is one of the better asian horror movies. Not very original, but well done and creepy.

The Yanks did a decent job of it, too. And they're releasing an Unrated DVD this month. I love the Spirit Photography angle...I was reading up on it online and it's really creepy stuff. They've got a cool feature on the Shutter site where you can upload photos and make your own spirit photography shots. Pretty cool.

The original, from Thailand, is one of my favorites from the "Asian horror scene." I saw it during Christmas break last year, wasn't expecting much because I had pretty much burnt myself out on the ghost-girl-with-long-black-hair thing . . . but SHUTTER blew me away!
What a creepy, creepy movie. And that final image? Holy shit, it's been a long time since anything in a movie gave me goosebumps like that!
Highly recommended. I won't be bothering with the American remake, personally.

Actually, I was fooling around on their DVD release site and found a feature where you can make your own 'spirit photography'--I uploaded a picture and saw it in a banner ad for the release on another site:

It was wild seeing it up there!

Yeah, it's a fun site, fun way to promote the release. The Thai SHUTTER is very strong, well worth the effort. And I LOVE the unrated DVD of Masayuki Ochiai's version, watched it twice already this week, I want to see more of his stuff...anyone got an Ochiai recommendations?
