I've heard many things about this movie, but none of the Blockbusters in my area ever have it for rent. They have it at Best Buy for $14.99, so should I pick it up? Is it worth fifteen bucks?

Wether its worth fifteen bucks depends what you are expecting to get out of it. I’ll just talk a little about the DVD and then the film. The one you saw was probably the Lions Gate DVD of the film which is the one with the white cover with the girl on the top. The good thing about this version is that it has just about all the extras of the old Ventura release plus a few more added and also only comes in the more graphic cut of the film unlike the old release which came in two versions. The cut version is the one that Blockbuster videos picked up so for anybody trying to see the film for the first time if its at a Blockbuster and you are trying to rent or buy it used, if it’s the Ventura DVD with the yellow cover make sure it says un-rated directors cut on the box. Otherwise the Lions Gate version is well worth the buy.
Next up for the film. If you have seen just a couple of other Takashi Miike films in the past then don’t expect this to be quite like many of his others films. It’s a psychological drama, suspense film and a very good one. In terms of the graphic violence in the film, there is a lot of it but its towards the end and its not really what the film is all about. The great thing about Miike is that he can work in a very wide variety of styles and genre, this is a pure example of that. I will say that I really loved this one and that it consistently makes it into the top three of lists of peoples favorite Miike films.

Thanks for the info lemmy. I haven't seen any of Takashi Miike's other films, so that won't be a problem as far as expectations or anything. And yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the Lions Gate version I saw at Best Buy. I may just have to pick it up in the next week or two.

Also just to add one thing, the $15 price tag is okay for Best Buy but you could buy it online for about $8. www.deepdiscountdvd.com has the best deal on it at $7.97. Otherwise if you don't already know about it check www.dvdpricesearch.com its really a must have resource when picking up R1 DVD's.

Audition is truly a classic of asian cinema, and cinema in general. If you're in for some kind of shockfest, you may want to skip this one, as it will most likely bore you until the film's climax. However, if you are in the mood for some good, grisly fun, an essential Miike flick is without a doubt, Ichi The Killer. Ichi's got it all: gore, sex, blood, sadomasochism, profoundly dark humour, this film is destined to entertain. But Audition is truly an arthouse extravaganza, and should not be missed by anyone.

Great flick. Don't know how much you rent movies but I would suggest checking out netflix. I did not go just for how easy it is not having to go to a store, I chose them because the selection rocks.

Well, it's been a couple weeks since I posted this thread, but I just wanted to let everyone know that Best Buy is currently selling it for $4.99 this week (I saw the advertisement today in the little Best Buy mini-catalog thing that comes with the Sunday paper). Looks like I'll be heading down to Best Buy tomorrow!

I finally got around to watching it a few days ago, and I gotta say that I really liked it. I could see why some people may be turned off by the fact that nothing crazy really happens for the first hour or so, but I thought that only built up the ending that much more. And the torture scene definitely didn't let me down, that was some painful shit!
I also read somewhere online while looking up info about the movie that the actress who played Asami (if I'm remembering her name right) actually threw up in the bowl in that scene towards the end because she's a method actor...anyone else heard this?

$4.99? Shit, I wish I saw this earlier.

Yeah, it was a great deal. But it does seem like Best Buy is doing this $4.99 deal on various DVDs more and more lately, usually about three or four movies per genre each week.
