SUPER 8

This summer has been good to me. I've really liked the blockbusters that have been offered thus far (with the exception of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, which I outright refused to see). That being said, SUPER 8 is the first summer film that I out-and-out LOVE. It hits all the right notes for me in what I want to see in a movie. It almost perfectly hits the tone of every classic Amblin movie of the 80's. I had a smile on my face throughout this entire movie. It's been quite a while since I've seen a movie like this, and I must say I do miss them. The kids swear more than adults in the movie, the threat is very real, people die, well staged carnage, and even some effective scares. Highly recommended.

Yeah that's what I've heard. That it was like the Goonies, ET and Monster Squad. Love the sound of that because I've had recent conversations about how kids' movies today aren't like they were in the 80s.

I don't do the theater thing very often but I went and saw this this afternoon and yeah, it's damn good. It's a solid film that's a lot of fun and well worth the ticket price. Yup, J.J. Abrams has made a very memorable movie. see it at the theater while you can.

Can't wait to see the remake in a couple of years.

Do you agree that the film is a successful attempt at making a "new Goonies"? That's some big time praise, and I think the movie deserves it. Kids deserve it too. Movies like The Goonies and Monster Squad don't come along often enough these days...

I honestly wouldn't compare the two, other than to say they are both movies with kid leads. Goonies is a simple kids adventure movie with a lot of heart. This is a big budget sci-fi action movie with heart. It's more like a Cloverfield for kids meets Monster Squad and ET hybrid.

But as it is, I would say it's easily as good as The Goonies, if not, dare I say, better.

Saw this the other night and absolutely loved it. All the comparisons to other movies are valid. Completely in the vain of those "kid's" movies we grew up with where the young leads act how kids act, curse more than the adults, etc. and you grow attached to them immediately. I found myself smiling throughout the whole movie. Just fell in love with it.

I wasn't actually trying to compare the two films in a traditional sense. I was just trying to say Super 8 is a quality movie with some quirky kids, and I think it'll be a big deal later on down the road. I could easily see this movie, in 20 years, being as popular as The Goonies is with the people who grew up watching it.

You're pretty much dead on with your description of the movie, though...

Yup, the kids in this movie are easy to like...and they remind me of how my friends and I acted when we were kids....

Re: SUPER 8

I'm glad some of you guys are finally getting around to seeing this movie. I thought it was one of the best I've watched in years. I've watched this movie repeatedly with friends. I even sat down with my brother & sister and made them watch it....and we NEVER spend time together.

The thing about Super 8 that gets me is the kids. The kids in Super 8 remind me of the friends I had when I was a kid, and I don't know if any of you will agree with what I'm saying...but being a kid was f*ckin' awesome. I'll always have a soft spot for movies like The Goonies, Super 8, Monster Squad, The Gate, etc. That stuff just reminds me of a better time...when I didn't have a care in the world and didn't even need a dollar...

Re: SUPER 8

I watched Super 8 today and enjoyed it a lot. It totally had that old school vibe to it and the kids acted like real kids rather than what a hip executive thinks a kid acts like. I didn't read anything about what this movie was about before watching so I had no idea what to expect. I'm so glad it didn't take place in present day when every kid has a cell phone and all they try to do is show how hip they are to the times.

I'm definitely going to watch it again soon. It's not too often now that I watch a movie more than once.

One of the best parts was during the end credits when you get to watch 'The Case'. I loved it.

Re: SUPER 8

This is like The Goonies in a creature feature. Loved it on the big screen and pull it out maybe once a year. Has a good dose of humour mixed with enough creature feature violence. Love it.
