Dellamorte Dellamore

I finally got around to watching this movie yesterday and to be honest with you I don't see the big deal. I mean it wasn't the worst zombie movie ever but it damn sure isn't anything special. Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not bashing this movie or trying to spark an argument with the people who really like it. I'm just posting my thoughts on it because it seems to be really popular with you guys here on the board and I never had the chance to see it until now.

I love Dellamorte Dellamore. There are so many elements that draw me in to this film, that I don't know where to start. The directing and cinematography are fantastic, there are some amazing and beautiful shots. Rupert Everett, François Hadji-Lazaro and Anna Falchi are perfect in their roles. Like many great spaghetti horrors, the story is horrific and dreamlike. A true gem in its genre, and it holds up very well to repeated viewings.

Re: Dellamorte Dellamore

I enjoyed it simply for the originality. It was nice to see a different take on the zombie genre. For me the story started out strong. I believe this is based on a series of comics? As the story started to stray around the middle so did my interest, although I thought I was told (probably here) that it roughly followed the comic plot. Also, those sublime endings leave me cold sometimes. I do agree that the sets and the photography were excellent. The cemetery was awesome IMO.

I have to be in a particular mood to watch Euro films, otherwise there's a good chance I just will not enjoy them. I'm the same way with goofball comedies like AIRPLANE or MONTY PYTHON. One thing that I truly dig is the Italian overdub, something about the sound gives them a totally separate dimension, it's like watching a movie when your high.

Re: Dellamorte Dellamore

I guess that's where I differ from most of you guys. I am "apparently" never in the mood for euro horror. Everyone used to tell me how good Zombie, The Beyond and The Gates Of Hell were so I rushed out and bought them and I'd say they are easily 3 of the 10 worst horror movies I've ever watched. I could say the same thing about The Blind Dead films. The only foreign movie that comes to mind that I actually like is Shaun Of The Dead. I just don't get the whole Italian or Euro thing I guess. Maybe it's just me? I've seen Zombie, Zombie 3, The Beyond, The Gates Of Hell, Suspiria, Tenebre, The Blind Dead movies, Hellraiser, Haute Tension and now Cemetary Man/Dellamorte Dellamore among many others and I honestly think that they are all terrible. I don't want them to be terible, I would stop watching them altogether if that was the case, it just seems I'm not cut out for the euro thing. I just don't see the artistry you guys see. I can see the creepy atmosphere of a lot of them, I actually put Zombie in my top 10 zombie films for it's setting and atmosphere alone. Maybe in time my views on the subject will change, who knows? I've been told "time and time again" that euro is an acquired taste. I've just never acquired it yet. Don't get me wrong, there are tons of american horror movies that I think are terrible too. I don't like horror for horror's sake, I like horror that suits my personality...

I disagree. "Eurohorror" is a good blanket term to describe horror movies from Europe but when you start referring to it (Eurohorror) as something like "an acquired taste" then you've lost me because Europe, like other continents, produces many different horror movies of varying quality, style, theme, and story. Take Italy for example, they were probably the biggest and best producer of "Eurohorror" back in the 70's and 80's and even those titles vary from one another greatly. You really can't compare a movie like Zombie to Tenebre as they are really nothing alike (of course if you think they suck then I guess they would both be categorized under "movies that suck"), the only thing they really have in common are their country of origin and genre. Still, I do use this blanket term sometimes as it is fitting in many, but certainly not all, respects. (Didn't mean to stray so far off topic but I kinda rolled my eyes when I saw your friends pretentious quote. ) Assuming you don't mind subtitles I'm sure you'll find plenty of horror movies from countries/continents that you like and just as many from each country/continent for the shitlist.

As for DD, I like it better with every viewing. Years ago when I saw this movie for the first time I thought it was just ok but back then I watched a lot of movies simply for the fact that I thought they might have a lot of gore. As I get older I find that I'm starting to "soften up" a bit in that I'm starting to appreciate humor in horror movies. During my last viewing I laughed a few times, I don't remember finding anything funny enough to laugh at on the first 2 viewings and I was watching the same subbed DVD all 3 times. It wasn't the humor that made me like this one this time, it was just an added bonus.

I forgot to add that the soundtrack by Riccardo Biseo and Manuel De Sica also plays a strong part in my enjoyment of this film.

I've been meaning to ask if there is a Soundtrack of this released anywhere. I haven't seen it on Diabolik or Xploited...

This is the European Evil Dead for me. I think its a great horror movie but it seems so cheesy to me, not that theres anything wrong with that. The only reason I ever even saw this movie is because the place I rented it had a sticker on the box saying you had to be 21 to rent it. This is pretty much the only "Eurohorror" I've ever seen besides Hellraiser and High Tension which both rank high for me.

Re: Dellamorte Dellamore

I fucking loved Cemetary Man, it had a good atmosphere, great effects, attitude and humor, gore.. everything I want in a horror movie. It can move a bit slow at points but I was entertained throughout (and I enjoyed the nicest pair of tits to grace a movie screen in years).

It also was a good discussion piece with my friend from Bosnia, he was watching it with me and just kept tell me he had seen it before, at the time it was brand spanking new and I knew there was no way.. a week later he brings over a "Dylan Dog" comic book and sure enough it was the same plot completely (which was later released in italy as Dellamorte Dellamore). Thought that was pretty cool.

Re: Dellamorte Dellamore

You know, I watched High Tension again the other day and it wasn't that bad. Maybe I just didn't give it a chance the first time around, now that I think of it I think I might actually like it. Come to think of it I remember watching Suspiria a few years back and I didn't exactly hate it either. Maybe I am slowly coming around, I think I should watch The Gates Of Hell, The Beyond and Zombie again, it's been quite a long time since I've watched any of them. I haven't watched The Beyond in about 7 years, Zombie in around 3, and I honestly don't remember the last time I watched The Gates Of Hell/City of the Living Dead. Where can I buy a copy of The Gates Of Hell on dvd for a reasonable price? I don't really want to pay 20 bucks for it. In other words, I'm ready to give the Euro thing another go. Now that I'm a little more mature I might see the artistry that you guys have been talking about for years. Could you guys recommend any euro movies other than the staples every horror fan has watched? Do Demons and Demons 2 count as Euro Horror? I like those movies just fine. The first one is a Dario Argento movie isn't it?

Re: Dellamorte Dellamore

Fulci films are tough to say you will like them in time.
I loved Zombie and I love the mans work, but damned if his movies can't get downright boring at times.

Gates of hell is slow moving and nonsensical, but worth it because the gore scenes are some of the best ever done.

The Beyond is the same, it's slow moving but there is some damned awesome creepy stuff to be seen in it. I think it's a hard type of film to get into, the characters are impossible to to relate to and the watcher feels alienated from what is happening. I myself am trying to get through House by the Cemetary, I have yet to get more than 30 minutes in before falling asleep.. I need to watch it after a cup of coffee or two.

But Cemetary Man I find to have very interesting characters and good humor throughout.. I got into it very easily.
