I liked it quite alot. Paul Williams is great in it. A very Underrated film by a, in my opinion, very overrated director.

Yeah, they used to have midnight showings of this in my hometown. Great songs, great art direction, and the very lovely Jessica Harper. One of De Palma's finer outings that sadly has been missed by many genre fans (I don't think it's an exploitation flick though).

Haha, yeah, I'd agree -- it's not really an exploitation film. In fact, when I clicked on this thread, I was almost half expecting you guys to be talking about an entirely different film.
Yeah, I saw this film a loooooooooong time ago, and most recentely I saw bits and pieces one night on ScreamTV. It's a fun film... a little strange, but definetely enjoyable if you're in the right frame of mind for it.

I liked this movie a lot. Some pretty good songs, great characters and a plot that (in tipical De Palma fashion) borrows freely from a lot of sources (this may be what you'd get if you ran Faust, The picture of Dorian Grey, The phantom of the opera and any Broadway musical through a blender). And beef, the fey rocker, was hilarious!
...Like the other, I don't think this qualifies as exploitation, through.

Awesome movie indeed. My brother, who, like me, is a lifelong fan of the movie, just got the Death Records logo (dead bird laying on it's back) tatooed on his arm, as a tribute to our aunt who is currently dying from cancer.

I liked this movie a lot. I love Beef! ^_^

Re: PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE

Beef is indeed one funny-ass character. Only other flick I've seen with the guy who plays him is the horribly lame Chud 2 : Bud the Chud, where he plays the titular character (oh, how the mighty have fallen!).

Just ordered it from amazon and I can't wait. I think the only Depalma film I've seen is the Untouchables, never been very familiar with him. Oh and I believe I've fallen asleep during Scarface one or two times.

On an interesting note, my home town, Winnipeg, Manitoba has gained a name for itself as, sort of one huge Paradise fan. We have this huge convention, Phantompalooza every year, and our theatre company is putting together a stage production.

Just watched it today. Wow, what a movie. More stuff happens in its 92 minutes than any 3 hour epic. Love the music, love the style, probably better than that recent film version of the Phantom of the Opera musical. Great great great.

I thought it was exploitation of 70's glam-rock?

I just re-watched this one (my bro seems to be wearing wife beaters every time I go visit him, which means I'm being proeminently exposed to his Death Records tattoo, and as such I am being constantly being reminded of this flick)...
No matter how many times I see that flick, I freakin' love it. DePalma at his best, IMHO. A timeless classic. Well worth tattooing on your inner bicep.
