I didn't know it was targetted at kids. Well, kiddy movie or not, it's creepier and spookier than most not-for-children horror movies, imho. I know it sure freaked me out the first time I saw it It's a shame that, nowadays, children's movies have become so tame, bland and non-threatening...
I remember part 2 being a total disapointment.
There are simply too many people who either can't or won't distinguish the difference between movies/video games and reality these days. Bland childrens movies and games are extremely commonplace, and I put the blame fully on the shoulders of the lazy parents who'd rather condemn something as trash rather than explain it to their children. Producers, directors and programmers have been bashed for releasing sleaze for years, and it seems that they've come to terms with it. Most video game developers and film studios don't try to push the envelope of things that are developed for children anymore because every time they do it's nothing but trouble. It really is a shame, because kids are missing out on a lot of great things simply because they have lazy parents who aren't worthy of raising children...
And The Gate 2 was pretty bad...
