Here's one I revisited last night and so I just feel the need to once again sing its praises. Honestly, it isn't exactly a slasher, but it doesn't fit in any of the other forum categories so here it is ![]() What it is, is a mad scientist type film about an eye surgeon whose daughter loses her sight in a car accident. Well, daddy decides that her sight will be restored at any cost! So he starts with her boyfriend, removing his eyes to transplant in his daughter. Sounds cool, but that's not the best part. The best part is that he doesn't kill the boyfriend, keeping him alive under the assumption that he'll be able to fix his sight too. So the doc and his wife lock the boyfriend in a cage in the basement. Well, that's all fine and well until the transplanted eyes mysteriously fail, leading to more and more victims, eyeless and insane! Oh, and the cage is electrified. Really entertaining, often creepier than I expected it to be, this is a gem. The eyeless FX were done by a younger Stan Winston (billed as Stanley) and are pretty effective in the right lighting which is surprising because they use full-on prosthetics rather than just makeup. The DVD for this is budget. The transfer appears to be unrestored film, so it's scratchy, changes colors and generally looks like shit. The sound is muffled and difficult to hear at times and unfortunately tends towards the high end of the audio spectrum meaning there's a lot of up and down on the volume while watching this one. For me these issues aren't issues at all having grown up in the era of dupes and abused rental tapes, but it could be a pain in the ass for others. But I think the problems are worth overlooking. |
