You are going to some problems there. The reason for that is US based sites that import Asian DVD’s usually do not sell DVD’s of western films unless they are older ones that have not been released officially. Of corse that’s just because of the legal issues of a US based site doing something like this, US sites like HKFlix and others have already been given plenty of warnings and threats of legal action in the past about carrying or even providing a reference listing for films that US companies have North American distribution rights to. The other two options you have are sites like Ebay and Froogle on which you can sometimes find US sellers offering newer western films on Hong Kong, Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese or Singapore DVD’s with Chinese subs, but if you are going that route you will probably start running into bootlegs. The most reliable choice is to order directly from a Asian based site and there are many of them that are geared towards international business. I’ll post some links with info bellow in case you want to go that route. If you do what you can expect from releases of western films are a price range of usually $5 to 11 US and shipping that depending on the site after it is spread out over a whole order would come to between $ .85 to 1.50 per DVD. The DVD’s will usually but not 100% of the time contain the original English audio track and a dub track which will probably be Mandarin for Mainland, Singapore, Taiwanese and Malaysian DVD’s and Cantonese for HK DVD’s. They will also usually come with both traditional and simplified Chinese subs. www.buyoyo.com This is the site I would recommend the most. Its based in Hong Kong and is generally considered one of the most reliable as well as oldest sites that sell a great deal internationally. The big things you should know before ordering are they take all major credit cards with they process through a third party banking system. I have made more then twenty orders with them over the corse of four or five years and can say I’ve never had a problem other then two instances where they sent me the wrong DVD and it was quickly sorted out, but that’s out of probably more then 400 DVD’s I’ve received from them. When you make an order with them they, through the third party banking system take out the money right away. Depending on what is in stock and to be ordered it usually takes around four days for the DVD’s to be shipped out and after that about two days for the package to get there using the courier shipping option which is DHL or UPS. If you pick airmail its about one to two weeks. The shipping cost are in set increments that use something they call delivery unites which usually add up to one DU a DVD, and then more when you get into box sets or really oversized DVD’s. The DU increments are 1-2, 3-5, 6-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40 and 41-80. Anything at or above the 11-20 and the courier option is going to be cheaper. So to give an example the last order I made was twenty DVD’s which added up to 20 DU which cost around $27 so it averaged out to around $1.30 a DVD. The price would be the same regardless of where you are in the range so if I instead had gotten only 16 DVD’s and not twenty the shipping would be the same. The other thing you should know is that DVD’s are listed as one of three categories, either in stock, out of stock or to be ordered. You can order in stock and to be ordered DVD’s, but what will happen is that it will compile the order for three to four days, then they will give it up to three more days to see if they can get all the remaining to be ordered items in, at the end of that time they ship out the package. Usually everything in the order is shipped out, but sometimes they cannot get a DVD in on time, or they find they cannot order it so its canceled from the order, in that case you would get a refund from the third party banking system in about one to two weeks. Usually I expect to get a canceled item at most about one in ten DVD’s an order. But there have been plenty of orders, even of thirty or forty DVD’s that have no canceled items. If you were buying mainly HK dvd’s of western films it would probably be even rarer to have canceled items. But be sure to check in your account information on the site that you want a refund to the credit or check card you used to make the order, otherwise it might be set to give you one in Buyoyo cash which is an incentive program on the site where for whatever you buy you get points for that on the next order can be converted into cash off. You can view the site in English by pushing the tab marked as such on the upper right hand side. The prices are also listed in both American and Hong Kong dollars. www.dddhouse.com This site is another HK based one which is very popular. They, like Buyoyo also cater towards international as well as domestic orders. The selection is about the same. The big difference is in the shipping. With Buyoyo the more you buy up until after 40 DU the cheaper the shipping overall. With this site its cheaper to buy small numbers or between 1 and 12. Anything more then that and the shipping price turns a bit higher then Buyoyo. Otherwise they are also dependable. www.sensasian.com This is a Malaysian based site that carries HK, Mainland, Taiwanese, Singapore and Malaysian DVD’s as well as Thai, Japanese, American and others. There selection is sometimes more varied, I tend to use them when I need to find something that is OOP or otherwise unavailable elsewhere. They will have some newer western films, although probably not as many as the other two sites. They also carry some bootleg tittles of Thai or other Asian DVD’s, usually stuff that’s otherwise out of print. |
