So what do you guys think. I personally find this to be somewhat brilliant spoof of lame teeny-bopper bullshit slashers. Although the years that follow won't be kind to it due to the majority of the humor coming from specific scenes from movies. Also, the sequels kind of ruined what could've been a stand-alone gem.

I agree, when this movie first came out I found it to be a pretty creative and very funny spoof of those pop slasher films. I haven't watched it since seeing it in theatres though... the lame sequels kind of spoiled my opinion of it unfortunately.
Anyone remember the tagline for it? Something about no sequel? Haha

Yeah, after the release of #2, they recalled the home video release to cross-out the "No" in front of "Sequel".
Something along the lines of "No Shame, No Mercy, No Sequel"

I liked the movie fine, but as is the general consensus, the sequels kind of spoiled it, turning it into a sort of hypocrite, "No Shame, No Mercy, No Sequel". It poked clever fun at an era of horror that I really despised, and it was unapologetic in doing so. I found the film, Shreik If You Know What I Did Last Friday The Thirteenth, which was released to video the same year, to be more entertaining.

I just watched that today. And I agree.
The thing I hated about Scary Movie were the constant, graphic bodily fluid jokes and frathouse humor. Too many fart jokes, too much sperm, too many damn gross jokes. Yuck!
Shriek had its' share of those too, but it was much more restrained when it came to the gross-out. It was funnier and more insightful about pop culture period. It didn't just poke fun at teen slashers, but at anything teen culture.
Also, while Scary Movie took its' cue from stuff like I'm Gonna Git You Sucka and kind of embarassed those very funny black spoofs by being so nasty and lame, Shriek took it's parody style from Airplane! Hence why it was just funnier. Even if its' production values and budget were lower.
When I saw Scary Movie, I laughed maybe 3 times. In fact I think I can remember when they were. Once during the "animal testing" joke, once during the black girl on her cellphone in the movie theater, and sometime during the "gay" ending explanation. But when I saw Shriek for the first time, I laughed steadily and I came away from that one with my gut hurting. Shriek is a great flick on 1st watch.

Scream only wishes it were Scary Movie Interestingly enough, "Scary Movie" was the original working title for Scream.

Good grief, that is the most overworked factoid of that movie: "Scary Movie" used Scream's original title. So much so that it almost single handedly proves there's nothing else interesting about the movie to say so.
Scary Movie was a dumb, sex-joke parody. Scream was an intelligent, interesting, bloody, and fun scary movie.
Sorry, Scream still rules. And at least Scream was somewhat original. Nothing in Scary Movie was new. Just old and stale. I'm serious. Fart and sperm jokes are not new. Not even the extremeness of the movie was original. Only the fact that a big studio would pay that much for what low budget, direct to video, frat house comedies had been doing for years prior.
Scream challenges viewers' intelligence, Scary Movie requires one to leave their intelligence at the door. But I guess since Scary Movie was a parody, you're entitled to like it more. But Scream was not a parody. So, saying it "wishes it were Scary Movie" is really kinda crazy.

Yeah, Scream is pretty alright. But if I were to have a choice between a serious Ghostface or a bombed-out Ghostface, I would choose the latter. Satirical jabs at the slasher genre wasn't anything new by then either, it was just more well hidden (or overlooked).

Okay, so if only Scary Movie had come out with that Ghostface mask design first. Well, actually I don't think that would have made them famous. Scary Movie owes everything to Scream because without it, Marlon and Sean Wayans would still be nododies.
And I never saw Scream as a satire. Of horror movies. But a satire of teenagers who assume to know horror films just because they've seen a few.
But anyway, Shriek is still funnier than Scary Movie. Higher production values can't trump better writing.

We agree to disagree Scream got me into horror flicks anyway so it does deserve some credit in my life (entertainment wise).

Scream wasn't the first movie that made me really want to see horror films. But it was the movie that made me feel like I knew more about horror than anyone else I knew. So after it, I made sure to see every one I could possibly rent. A project that started off well but I got lazy and got tired of it after I watched a lot of garbage. Until DVD and House of Horrors site here, which reinvigorated me to see more. I didn't even know who Argento was before this website.
But still I think Scary Movie was just too gross to be funny. I know a ton of people who agree. Maybe I'm uptight or something. Whatever. But I glad you liked it.
