Wii/HDTV question
      #137298 - 05/11/08 05:55 PM

Okay, I'm sure Misfit can probably answer this question, though if anyone else knows the answer, feel free to chime in!

So I bought an HDTV yesterday (after getting a pretty damn good deal on it) and just went and bought the component cables for the Wii today. The TV is 720p and I know that the Wii only runs in 480p. My question is will my Wii games look okay if the TV does 720p, while the Wii only does 480p, or do I have to "lower" the resolution or something to make Wii games look good (as I've heard that playing Wii games on an HDTV can make games look worse). I guess in a nutshell, I want to know how to make my Wii games look best on a TV that runs in 720p.

These types of things are why I don't own a fancy pants TV yet. I'm afraid I'm not a big enough tech guy to know all this stuff. I really need to do some reading on this type of thing. If I find any info that will help you out I'll drop a link here...

Some games look like shit to begin with, if it's a well done game it should look great in 480P. Mario Kart is one of the better looking ones IMO>

Mario Kart is actually the first (and only) Wii game I tried and it looked pretty damn great, so that kind of helped ease my fears. From the research I did online, I think the component cables really help the Wii on an HDTV.

Though I did run into one problem and that is the virtual console games look like crap. They range from kinda bad (Super Mario Bros.) to downright horrible (Donkey Kong Country) and the fact that the TV is a 52" certainly doesn't help matters. Anyone know if there's a way to lower the resolution when I play the old school games or am I doomed with super-pixelated graphics?

You can't choose to make the screen smaller with the virtual console games like you could with the game boy player on the GC? That sucks...

I don't think there is a way, those types of games just have a set resolution and were designed for standard def televisions where the blur of them blended everything together.. once you put those on something that shows every pixel clearly, they will not be a pretty.. I have played quite a few on my TV and thought they still looked fine, guess I've been playing them emulated in 1200p for so long on PC I've gotten used to that.

A friend of mine suggested that I drop the Wii resolution back down to 480p and do the screen ratio as 4:3 instead of 16:9 when it comes to the virtual console games, and I must say that it helped a lot. Granted, the games still don't look quite as good as they did on my old TV, but they look much better than what I was seeing last night.

You more than likely won't need to do that, most tv's really let you choose the view mode, can cut it back to a dot by dot for most games.
