Making the jump to HD TV...
      #136591 - 03/07/08 03:21 PM

Well, I convinced myself I would not venture in to HD territory until the HD DVD vs Blu Ray war was over. It is. Yesterday I ordered the JVC LT-37X688 from NewEgg.com for $999 (no shipping, no tax).

The TV gets good to great reviews and the price is the best I could find anywhere. Of course, I am no stranger to the fact of life that once you buy something, you inevitably find a better deal shortly after (hasn't happened yet, but it will no doubt).

Ordered an 1080p upscaling DVD player for $50 with free HDMI cable (from Walmart of all places).

Tonight I am going to call DirecTV and tell them I am switching to Cox digital cable to get a free HD DVR, but my real intention is to get DirecTV to upgrade me for free. All my local channels are broadcasting in HD already though, thats a bonus.

Still holding out on a Blu Ray player until they fall in to the $100 range, but with HD DVD out of the way, it shouldn't be a long wait, maybe till the holiday season later this year. As it stands now anyway, I am not eager to start buying Blu Ray media anytime soon, the price per disc needs to come down too.

Anyone else making the jump or plan to soon?

Got a nice HDTV set a while back, definately stick to Sat for HD, I have Dish network and MonstersHD and KungfuHD make it totally worth it, the quality and selection on cable sucks in comparison.

Keep the wait on Blu-Ray a long time
1) until they finish it.. I expect profile 2.0 to be the last screwover for current owners(but then again I expected 1.1 would be so it's hard to say) , 2.0 comes this winter.
2) HD-DVD was not the only competition,it still needs to penetrate more of the market before it will stick around for the long run.. there are so many things looming over it and it's been progressing so slowly it's hard to say it will stick around any more than HD-DVD did.. I expect it may do well enough to stick around.. we should know in about a years time, personally upscaling is where I went.. I'm personally sick of Sonys bullshit and will never go blu.

I do know DirectTV is supposed to be pretty great for HD, I wish they would get monsters, I can't part with Dish because of it.. if they took all of us on this board, collected every wet dream we ever had into a big 5 gallon tub and transformed it magically into a tv channel.. MonstersHD would be that channel.

I'll be taking the leap in late April or early May, I should have more money by that point. As far as the Blu Ray players and discs are concerned I'm going to wait until they are the norm. Standard dvds are still fine with me. I really want HD for football and video games, other than that it doesn't matter to me, I don't watch much tv anyway. I know HD-DVD was a bust but I'm not totally sure that Blu Ray is the future either...

Just something interesting, we just moved into my parents home until our new house is ready, they have standard cable(comcast). They don't even have a cable box just the basic service and no frills. When I hooked up my HDTV I did a scan and it picked up all sorts of HD stuff, funny thing is you are supposed to need an HD Receiver for this but my TV gathered it all, it was mostly the local channels, PBS and TNT, but it was cool that it was there... at no extra cost.

If your a fan of horror films then I must suggest 30 Days of Night on HD. I saw it in the theaters and it was a good movie. ON HD its a classic movie. You feel the cold and the tension is thick enough to cut with a knife. All Have to say is every Horror fan with an HDTV should have this film.

I thought 30 Days Of Night was an awesome movie up until about 10 minutes before it ended. The ending was LAME! The ending was so bad that it seemed as if they took a bad idea from everyone involved with the film, put them into a hat and had a drawing to see who's bad idea got filmed...

No way. It's not that bad. I've seen shittier endings that ruin movies and this wasn't one of em.

W00t! Got DirecTV to upgrade me to an HD DVR for free! Had to be escalated up the phone chain three levels, but it paid off. BTW, I was never a dick and was very polite.

I am hoping DirecTV adds MonstersHD and KungfuHD eventually, if I was going to change to Dish those would be a great reasons!

HOLY SHIT! [Re: MojoNexus]
      #136681 - 03/17/08 05:02 PM

Ok. My HD TV is installed. Got my 1080p upscaling DVD player today. Have married the two together via HDMI. And I cannot believe how fucking AWESOME my DVDs look on this! HOLY SHIT! Spent a few moments going through a THX setup from one of the Star Wars discs to ensure I had it looking its best. If my standard DVD collection is gonna look this good, no way in hell am I going to rush out to get a Blu Ray player or discs. Man, this is so nice!

Seriously, I think people who are not satisfied with upscaling have not seen it on a really good player, some don't clean up the picture as well as others.

Granted some movies don't look as good as others but the same goes for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, the original movie has to be high quality for good results.

I made the mistake or watching Steven Segals new movie "Pistol Whipped" upscaled this week(the mistake was both watching it....and watching it upscaled). He has gotten old and his face is all leathery, his hair now looks fake and ratty.. it was so magnified by the upscaling it was insane, you could see every wrinkle and bit of makeup they tried to cover them up with... it was terrible.. not everything benefits haha.

Ha! I read an article about how folks in the porn industry are horrified by HD. Every imperfection and blemish is now in perfect detail. While that is bad enough, I am sure nothing looks more 'alien' than a 37" punany.
