SARS Wars (2004) aka Sars Wars: Bangkok Zombie Crisis

I would like to thank everyone who responded to the first of these Asian Zombie themed posts. Now we are off to Thailand for the second film in this series.

Thai films have been fairly slow to circulate into North America and Europe, especially compared to the films of Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and China. Those that have made it tend to be action and drama films, or more mainstream fantasy and horror films. But there is a lesser known tradition of over the top, wacked out bizarro-fests that share many of the genre mixing tendencies with Hong Kong cinema. SARS Wars is one of the few of these films to attain some notoriety outside of Thailand.

The plot set up involves a rich girl being kidnaped by a criminal gang and a over the top bounty hunter being sent after her.

This is just an excuse to get a series of diverse and crazy characters to find themselves in a building when suddenly a new strain of the SARS virus hits, with the slight difference to the previous strains being that it turns the infected into the flesh hungry, living dead.

The survivors attempt to escape the building only to discover that the government has it locked down and will not be of any help.

What follows is a interesting mixture of zombie hordes, zombie snakes, zombie babies, star wars parodies, animated sequences, unexpected love triangles and things exploding.

SARS Wars is a fun, fast paced film that gives fairly high production values and will likely be enjoyed by most people. The other big positive is that this film is very easy to come by. It has been released on Region 1 DVD in North America and its fairly easy to get in other regions as well. You can locate it at most retail and many video rental stores as well as services such as Netflix. Part three of this series will appear this Friday and as before comments are very welcome.
