Last month there was a new Region 1 Takashi Miike release. Its very different from his other pervious releases because of one major reason. Its not exactly a normal film, more of a filmed play, which he directed/produced back in 2005. On top of that it’s a minimalist play that takes place on the same sparse set. I must say that to my surprise I really loved it.

Without giving away anything major, the basic plot involves a couple who live in the mountains and must ring a ceremonial bell three times a day in order to keep a destructive god in check. There are dashes of politics and social allegory centered around a story that flows really well.

The packaging and description does not mention what this really is, so someone stumbles upon this film by chance might just turn it off or condemn it in their minds after realizing what it is, but for those willing to give it a chance it’s a interesting Miike creation. Its length is also a little more then some would prefer, being around two and one-half hours. But as I’ve said it flows really well and I was never board while watching it. The disc is released by Kotch, and its well done, although the only extra is a series of short interviews with Miike about the play.
