Zombie film Review Series 10: Wild Zero
      #138618 - 08/20/08 01:25 PM

Wild Zero (2000)

Here is another classic of the Asian horror wave that began in the late 1990's. From Japan, starring Guitar Wolf, its Wild Zero.

The film centers around Guitar Wolf, a real life Japanese band known for their Rock N’ Roll Greaser esthetic. In the film they are a club band, wandering around, playing venues and sometimes needing to kick some ass.

The man on the left is Ace, he wants to be as cool as Guitar Wolf, but its just not happening. He does have the right attitude, so GW gives him a magic whistle so that if he should ever need them GW will come to his aid.

Or corse Ace wonders into a region experiencing a rash of UFO sightings and to make things worse Zombies seem to be everywhere.

Guitar Wolf is also being hunted by a deranged club owner on a revenge quest.

Ace gets some advice from a Obi-Wan Kenobi style vision instructing him on the spirit of Rock N’ Role, armed with this advice he uses the whistle and knows what must be done.

In short Guitar Wolf arrives, fights zombies, hooks up with a group of survivors and seem to have things well in hand, until another self described King of the Zombies arrives with death ray vision and a bad attitude.

Guitar Wolf handles the crisis in their usual low key way.

Now the aliens have arrived and all that stands between life and death for Earth is the power of Rock N’ Roll.

This strange film is basically a Guitar Wolf road movie, they are playing themselves and their music is uses frequently. The zombies are fairly well done, with a moderate amount of gore and a fun and strange story to complement the action. The film became a underground hit in the USA and Canada and lead to a region 1 DVD with some nice extras including a drinking game that goes for around $14US. For those looking for more Guitar Wolf action, check out a music DVD called Red Idol which was released in 2003. It has a bunch of music videos and Guitar Wolf content, although it isn’t as widely released as the film, the band itself still being a niche commodity. You can film it on Amazon.com for around $14.

This is another movie that I've wanted to see for quite a while.

I'm thinking pretty seriously about ordering Wild Zero and Junk from amazon...

This is one of my favorite cult flicks ever. Pure insane over-the-top fun, a good message, a great soundtrack, zombies, UFO's, and motherfuckin' Guitar Wolf !!!

"And I have saw Guitar Wolf open for the Cramps about 10 years ago..."

Great show. There was another band, The Demolition Doll Rods, that opened that night. They were a three piece band, with two females. The played their set wearing thongs and ice cream cones taped to their nipples.

Half way through the Guitar Wolf set, Seiji pulled a kid out of the front row, gave him a beer and his guitar then pointed the kid to the mic.

And the Cramps... what can I say. Awesome.

Wild Zero is a favorite for me, my friends all seem to dislike it and I just don't get how they can't see it's awesomeness.

It's just a classic rock and roll tale of boy meets girl, boy finds out girl has a cock, boy overlooks cock and still loves girl, then they kill some fucking zombies...

it's a definate buy, the DVD has a drinking game included that is a lot of fun.
