Rather Odd Question
      #132873 - 01/16/07 12:17 PM

As you know, most of the Asian movies we import we want to watch in english and such, this is slightly off topic.

My fiancee is from Guangzhou, China. Her english is good and I have some great asian horror to keep her entertained for a while.. but I'd love to find a nice collection of big Hollywood movies with Chinese Subtitles and/or Audio.

Does anyone know of a US based import seller where we can buy our own everyday movies, with Chinese language options?

You are going to some problems there. The reason for that is US based sites that import Asian DVD’s usually do not sell DVD’s of western films unless they are older ones that have not been released officially. Of corse that’s just because of the legal issues of a US based site doing something like this, US sites like HKFlix and others have already been given plenty of warnings and threats of legal action in the past about carrying or even providing a reference listing for films that US companies have North American distribution rights to.

The other two options you have are sites like Ebay and Froogle on which you can sometimes find US sellers offering newer western films on Hong Kong, Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese or Singapore DVD’s with Chinese subs, but if you are going that route you will probably start running into bootlegs.

The most reliable choice is to order directly from a Asian based site and there are many of them that are geared towards international business. I’ll post some links with info bellow in case you want to go that route. If you do what you can expect from releases of western films are a price range of usually $5 to 11 US and shipping that depending on the site after it is spread out over a whole order would come to between $ .85 to 1.50 per DVD. The DVD’s will usually but not 100% of the time contain the original English audio track and a dub track which will probably be Mandarin for Mainland, Singapore, Taiwanese and Malaysian DVD’s and Cantonese for HK DVD’s. They will also usually come with both traditional and simplified Chinese subs.

www.buyoyo.com

This is the site I would recommend the most. Its based in Hong Kong and is generally considered one of the most reliable as well as oldest sites that sell a great deal internationally. The big things you should know before ordering are they take all major credit cards with they process through a third party banking system. I have made more then twenty orders with them over the corse of four or five years and can say I’ve never had a problem other then two instances where they sent me the wrong DVD and it was quickly sorted out, but that’s out of probably more then 400 DVD’s I’ve received from them. When you make an order with them they, through the third party banking system take out the money right away.

Depending on what is in stock and to be ordered it usually takes around four days for the DVD’s to be shipped out and after that about two days for the package to get there using the courier shipping option which is DHL or UPS. If you pick airmail its about one to two weeks. The shipping cost are in set increments that use something they call delivery unites which usually add up to one DU a DVD, and then more when you get into box sets or really oversized DVD’s. The DU increments are 1-2, 3-5, 6-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40 and 41-80. Anything at or above the 11-20 and the courier option is going to be cheaper. So to give an example the last order I made was twenty DVD’s which added up to 20 DU which cost around $27 so it averaged out to around $1.30 a DVD. The price would be the same regardless of where you are in the range so if I instead had gotten only 16 DVD’s and not twenty the shipping would be the same.

The other thing you should know is that DVD’s are listed as one of three categories, either in stock, out of stock or to be ordered. You can order in stock and to be ordered DVD’s, but what will happen is that it will compile the order for three to four days, then they will give it up to three more days to see if they can get all the remaining to be ordered items in, at the end of that time they ship out the package. Usually everything in the order is shipped out, but sometimes they cannot get a DVD in on time, or they find they cannot order it so its canceled from the order, in that case you would get a refund from the third party banking system in about one to two weeks. Usually I expect to get a canceled item at most about one in ten DVD’s an order. But there have been plenty of orders, even of thirty or forty DVD’s that have no canceled items. If you were buying mainly HK dvd’s of western films it would probably be even rarer to have canceled items. But be sure to check in your account information on the site that you want a refund to the credit or check card you used to make the order, otherwise it might be set to give you one in Buyoyo cash which is an incentive program on the site where for whatever you buy you get points for that on the next order can be converted into cash off. You can view the site in English by pushing the tab marked as such on the upper right hand side. The prices are also listed in both American and Hong Kong dollars.

www.dddhouse.com

This site is another HK based one which is very popular. They, like Buyoyo also cater towards international as well as domestic orders. The selection is about the same. The big difference is in the shipping. With Buyoyo the more you buy up until after 40 DU the cheaper the shipping overall. With this site its cheaper to buy small numbers or between 1 and 12. Anything more then that and the shipping price turns a bit higher then Buyoyo. Otherwise they are also dependable.

www.sensasian.com

This is a Malaysian based site that carries HK, Mainland, Taiwanese, Singapore and Malaysian DVD’s as well as Thai, Japanese, American and others. There selection is sometimes more varied, I tend to use them when I need to find something that is OOP or otherwise unavailable elsewhere. They will have some newer western films, although probably not as many as the other two sites. They also carry some bootleg tittles of Thai or other Asian DVD’s, usually stuff that’s otherwise out of print.

No problem. But to put it another way your main trouble with buying off a US based site is that the very fact that they would be selling Asian import DVD’s of big western films would automatically make them untrustworthy because no legit site could do it without getting shut down in double quick time.

Thanks,
I have been able to find Chinese subtitles but have had little luck getting the media players to display actual chinese characters instead of garbage.. I am making a little progress with that so I think I might stick to that pursuit being most of what I watch I like to put in Xvid/Divx for ease of access anyways.

I know what you mean about the bootlegs, when I was in China someone on the street tried to sell me Spiderman 3.. lol, the front looked totally legit but the back had shots from Ghostbusters.

Revisting the Subtitle Issue [Re: Misfit]
      #134369 - 07/16/07 03:07 PM

I wanted to revisit this issue in case anyone here uses video players or burns Divx to DVD to watch movies and wants computer subtitle files to play in said movie.

I wanted to get Chinese subtitles on movies for my fiancee, so after a lot of toying around I finally perfected this so I thought I would give a little how to guide in case any of you want to do the same(this also can be used to put English subs on Foreign movies that are without them).

Ok first what you need, several tools.
Firstly what you need is Virtual Dub mod, I find I want it with the LAME encoder built in, so the best package to load all your codems would be the following
AMVapp Package

Standard Version of Virtual Dub

if you have never used VD, I find it such a nice simple video editing app, it's a must have... I find even though it's simple, by adding free filters it becomes very powerful.

Subtitler

Put that in your Virtual dub plugins folder

Divxland Media Subtitler

now, the media subtitler mixed with the others will do the job, but I find it has some issues that makes me want to use other programs. So here is what to do.

open media subtitler and set the Subtitle Character set to Simplifyed Chinese(if you are doing as I am) or whatever the subtitle language will be. File/Open Text of Subtitle, it will make some changes, just choose OK and continue, now file/Save as, save the subtitle as an SSA (Substation Alpha). Now it will be encoded properly for future use.

Now open Virtual Dub, and open the video in question, if it bring up no prompts we are good to continue, and I will cover that step first, after that step I will cover what to do if you A) get a warning about VBR(Variable Bitrate Audio) or you just have audio sync problems in the finished product).

Ok, virtual dub is up.. the video is open and you have no audio warnings, go to Video and set it to full processing mode, Video/Compression choose your choice, Divx or Xvid(I like Xvid). Now go to Video/Filters and hit ADD, and choose subtitler, it will automatically have you browse to your SSA file, ok. Now under Audio make sure it is set to direct Stream copy. Go to File SAVE AS, choose a name for the final product and it will encode a movie with embedded subtitles in about 30-40 minutes (more if your computer sucks)

Ok, if we have VBR warning or Audio sync, extra steps here. We go to Virtualdubmod, open the video and hit NO to the suggestion of changing the audio header. under video full processing, compression Xvid or Dvix again your choice. under streams view all streams, click the audio track here once and on the right SAVE WAV, export the audio as a wave file this will take about 4 minutes. once done double click the existing sound stream to disable it, and hit ADD, add the wav file you saved. Right click the wave file that is now on the list and change it to FULL PROCESSING, right click it again and hit COMPRESSION, you want to select LAME here and I choose 48000 128bit, but you can do whatever you like, higher bitrate= larger filesize. Once done hit ok, save as and it will export a clean video with standard audio that won't lose sync. When it's complete go back to the step above and about embedding the subtitles and you are good to go.
