the great "BEGOTTEN" post
      #138805 - 09/14/08 11:23 PM

Has anyone heard of probably the most notorious, obscure, bizzare horror film ever made (BEGOTTEN)? I guess that if I would have to classify it , it would be experimental horror. The director is E. Elias Merhige and his vision is truly unique.
The following was taken from Amazon...
"BEGOTTEN is the creation myth brought to life, the story of no less than the violent death of God and the (re)birth of nature on a barren earth. Astounding and baffling critics and audiences alike, BEGOTTEN was named one of the Ten Best Pictures of 1991 by Time Magazine. Time's Richard Corliss wrote: "Nobody will get through BEGOTTEN without being marked... BEGOTTEN is a spectacular one-of-a-kind (you wouldn't want there to be two), filmed in speckled chiaroscuro so that each image is a seductive mystery, a Rorschach test for the adventurous eye." In production notes for the film, director Merhige commented, "Each shot in the film went through hours of preparation to achieve the look you will experience when viewing... the etheral "pulse" that hypnotically permeates the film. It took over ten hours to re-photograph less than one minute of selected takes." - taken from amazon

I found this movie at a scifi, comic convention and i bought it for 20 bucks. Im so glad I did. Now it runs for over 90 dollars on amazon.

I think this movie deserves all that it gets. I am always willing to watch it again. and BTW its in grainy, fuzzy, blurry black & white and there is no dialogue. its feature lenght too. Anyone heard of or seen this movie please post a comment. I love the film.

this movie had me at "god disembowling himself" and mother earth rising from the shit covered carcass. I don't remember what spurred me to get this film, I think one because it was when I was getting into things like MANBITESDOG, and Julien Donkey-boy, and 2, I couldn't believe it was the director of "shadow of the vampire".

This film has an excellent, and thought provoking story told through minimalistic use of sound. I love the look and feel of this flick, up until it gets to the climax, and they just keep chopping, and ripping, and it never stops for what feels like an extra 40 minutes worth of film. but overall cool stuff.

I owned a copy a long time ago, but sold it years back for around 40 bucks, shoulda held on to it I suppose? although my video store has a vhs tape, that I could try to get my hands on, lol.
