Rare horror DVDs
      #134409 - 07/22/07 11:24 PM

I picked up some extra copies like 3-5 years ago of some limited edition DVDs that I hoped would increase in value. Some that did:
Last House on Dead End St. (wow! going for $300 new)
Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (over $120 new on amazon)

But I bought a shit load of the 2 disc Army of Darkness DVDs (well 5 of them) and they seem to be worth LESS than the $50 I paid for them.

Same with Halloween 2 disc collectors edition.

I dunno, it’s like my dad always said, in order for something to be worth $X there has to be someone willing to pay that price for it; sticker price seldom reflects any real measure of value. There are discs out there that are consistently worth a lot of money (ie. an authentic Criterion release of Salo) but most aren’t. I see stuff like this in ebay stores and amazon stores all the time, watch the item for months and no one buys it; while I’m watching it someone else often lists the item auction style and it closes at like 1/8th the price the other people are trying to sell it for. I haven’t watched those particular ones on ebay so maybe in this case I’m wrong. However, those 2 movies have been re-released in comparable or identical editions by other companies so that’s going to make selling them for a high price harder. Who knows though, maybe someone out there really wants a tin case LSCL or a Barrel Entertainment release of LHODES and would buy it just because it was the only one they could find. (Neither of those discs are really “rare” imo, LHODES didn’t seem that limited and there were 5000 LSCL tin cases released; in order for something to be “rare” in my book there’s gotta be less than 1000 of them, maybe 500 or so.) Good luck selling them if that’s what you’re going to try and do though, you never know.

Yeah, I passed on that Criterion Salo when it was out, that movie is just disgusting for me, I hate child molestors. I think I'm holding some of my extra "rare" dvds for future trade value. Or maybe I'd sell them, who knows what they'll be worth in 5-10 years?

Overall I didn't think Salo was a very entertaining movie but it was pretty sick so I wanted to have it in my collection. I remember I was in the Virgin Megastore in NYC years ago when it had just come out and, strangely, they had tons of copies but I passed on it with the intention of picking it up at a later date. Unfortunately I never did pick it up and I've been kicking myself for it ever since. I wouldn't sell it if I had it but it would have been cool to have knowing it's so sought after. The Criterion Salo is actually one of the exception to what I said in my last post; I believe superior editions of this movie have been released on DVD elsewhere in the world but the going rate seems to remain the same for the now inferior one. I guess there are alot of people out there who really want a full Criterion collection. My OOP Criterion's don't go for anything.
Yeah, who knows what they'll be worth in 5 - 10 years but I think by that point they'll probably be on Blue-Ray or HD-DVD, I guess that could make the value go either way although I tend to lean towards down. Also, who knows what will happen to the ones you have open in 5 - 10 years; they might be good to have around as backups. The collectible market is a funny thing sometimes. Eh, whatever you do with them I hope you get something good for them or a decent price; they're good editions, I have them both (LHODES and LSCL). Just figured I'd post what I did before so you aren't surprised if you auction them and don't get those high prices you people trying to sell them for.

I got the Let Sleeping Corpses Lie limited edition tin box thingie, as well as a few others (Evil Dead 2, The Beyond, Hellraiser 1/2, etc.).
I certainly don't plan on selling them, but it's nice to know they're actually appreciating in value (even if it's not by all that much).

Well, I heard Blue Underground is putting out another version of Let Sleeping Corpses Lie on DVD and it's going to easily beat Anchor Bay's edition. Including interviews with the cast and real trailers instead of just the U.S. tv spot. Now I almost wish I hadn't bought the Walking Dead sixpack box.

Are we supposed to be buying DVDs for their value? I've just been buying movies that I like and watching them. Damn it all...

I checked it on ebay and you're right. People selling The Last House On Dead End Street want lots of money for it but nobody bids on it. I've got lots of things that are SUPPOSED to be worth a lot of money but nobody is willing to pay that money for them so technically they're worthless. I have an extremely rare variant of the Movie Maniacs Jason toy from series 1 that's almost 12 years old and it's supposedly worth $200, but everytime I check it on ebay it's selling for $40, so it's worth $40. I've got a Leatherface variant that's almost as rare that's supposedly worth $125 but it sells for $30. I've got tons of comics that are valuable according to Wizard Magazine but they don't sell either. Putting a definitive price on a collectible is a vastly overused/unimportant thing to do. Ultimately that collectible is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. On the late night sports memorabilia shows they LOVE to tell you what cards and autographed stuff are BOOKING for and then selling it for a third of that price. That alone will tell you that price guides are useless. Who is stupid enough to believe that people are willing to sell you valuable things for nothing? Is it out of the kindness of their hearts? Are they doing you a favor? No, they're selling worthless shit for a profit just like everyone else. Why would someone say an autographed A-Rod baseball is worth $250 when you can buy a ball for 5 bucks and go to Yankee stadium during batting practice and possibly get the autograph for free? Putting high mark ups on comic books and sports cards just fucks over the young kids that most of this stuff is marketed towards. Why should a 9 year old kid that loves Spider-Man have to pay 200 dollars for Ultimate Spider-Man #1? It's not rare, they're floating around all over the fucking place. I can see really old stuff being expensive but this new stuff that's mass produced and widely available isn't worth shit in my opinion. It seems like lots of other people feel the same way about it too...

When people are refering to Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, they're talking about the tin? Or the standard Anchor Bay release?

Well, I usually buy the DVDs to see the movies themselves for the first time. I don't use Netflix or any sites where you have to download the movies. I wouldn't get to see the movies if I didn't buy the DVDs.

I think the discs either get their value from bonus features or quality of transfer. Or just for the fact that they came out in the earlier days of DVD releases. '97 - 2000.

And of course, value increases with things like signatures, or if they're released in tin form, Limited Edition.

Other than these things, I'm clueless as to how the discs get their value anyway. Except for perhaps the fact that companies like Anchor Bay apparently can only hold the rights to their movies for 5 years. Then if they don't release another version, some other company gets the rights.

I imagine that makes the discs a little pricier.

I was quite surprised to find an original copy of a pc game I bought in 1988 (five 3.5 floppies in a box) selling for around $100 on eBay. I mean c'mon, 3.5 floppies? I guess everything is collectable to someone.
